Most of Eastern Europe is deeply religious. The less developed a nation is the more likely to be religious. Look at the difference between the heavily religious parts of the USA compared to the more liberal parts for example.

religion is a plague these days. it does so much harm

It gives hope though, look at all the donations made by religious conservatives to charities as compared to liberals there's a surprisingly large difference. So there's benefits and negatives.
