Just offer that, and I bet Greenland would pull a Texas and secede just to join us.

But why would they do that, when US states will be up for sale in less than 50 years?

They'll be able to buy some for themselves.

The EU already owns Romania.

Not the EU, because those guys don't own anything. EU-based companies own half of Romania's GDP already. That means Renault, BRD-Société Générale, Erste Bank, OMV, Heidelberg, retail chains (Kaufland, Metro) etc etc.

But then again, the UK's carmaking sector is no longer owned by British capital either (except for niche stuff like McLaren). Also, it's estimated that about $80bn have been moved out of Russia to the UK (most likely stolen money), where they bought real estate and businesses. And a third of UK's land is owned by aristocracy. So who owns the UK right now? Surely not "the people".

I'm hoping that Switzerland will buy it, tbh.

Romanians need to become Eastern Europe's mercs.

We're the country equivalent of those celebrities who are only famous for having money. No one actually likes us, and most outright dislike us. But they still keep track of everything we do.

Let's start a GoFundMe to buy California... I want to invite some of those Khmer Rouge guys to govern it.

When Margaret Thatcher attempted to create a national share-owning democracy by selling shares in privatised companies to individuals, many would sell their holdings immediately to make a quick buck.

'The people' had a chance to become the owners of their country's industries, but ultimately short-term gratification won out over long-term interests.

Something similar happened in Romania (and other Eastern Euro states) after the fall of communism. It's called voucher or coupon privatization. Most people just preferred to cash out immediately, yeah. But then, what could you expect, given that they lacked any economic education on share valuation?

Giving people shares is like giving them money. Of course they're going to spend it on what they want to spend it on, and it's highly unlikely that what they want to spend it on happens to be the shares you gave them.

Greenlanders want Greenland, and that is the only thing that will happen. They getting their country back, and I guess that is only fair, and will not cost them a :coin:

Hmmm. So we're talking about an independent resource rich country with virtually no military that hasn't had the time to join any alliances? Interesting.

Currently, they have an alliance with Denmark (as you may, or maybe not know), when it comes to foreign policies, economic policies, and defense. You should also know that Denmark is a member of NATO.

Ppl from Greenland want to be fully independent, someday, but for now, I guess this alliance suits them fine, for the most part.

It is pretty middle age to think you can buy a country and its inhabitants in this day and age. But then again, I guess Trump has many ideas and attitudes that are outdated by 100 years or more.

As we could expect, the Danish prime minister answered Trump, that buying Greenland, is out of the question, and not negotiable. The little child as he is, had one of his tantrums and called off the official meeting that was scheduled in Denmark.

What a total idiot.

You can read this in The Guardian today:
Danes have expressed shock and disbelief over Donald Trump’s cancellation of a state visit to Denmark after its prime minister rebuffed his interest in purchasing Greenland.

The US president’s proposal at first elicited incredulity and humour from politicians in Denmark, a Nato ally, with the former premier Lars Løkke Rasmussen saying: “It must be an April Fool’s Day joke.”

and this:
Anthony Scaramucci, a former communications director for Trump, told the BBC the much-pummelled president was like a punch-drunk boxer still standing in the 12th round with no real idea what he was doing. His handlers should throw in the towel, Scaramucci suggested.

Well, to be fair, purchase of foreign land is not unprecedented in US history.

The Louisiana purchase of 1803 doubled the size of the United States at the time. Harry Truman tried (but failed) to acquire Greenland in 1946 and Woodrow Wilson did successfully negotiated the purchase of US Virgin Islands from Denmark in 1917.

Greenland is important strategically to check renewed Russian aggression in Europe, but America’s NATO allies like Denmark aren’t pulling their weight at all. I’m sure Trump offered pretty outrageous terms to the Danish, but at least he had a valid reason to do so this time.

C-SPAN will be so much more entertaining when I can hear "I yield the floor to the senator from Greenland" and then an eskimo starts speaking in Kalaallisut about his village's troubles with Narwhal hunting.
