Can parents contribute to reducing flames from players?

Post by rsy »

I read the following in a comment on Reddit:

"I play games with my kids all the time and I'm 100% convinced that parents that play with their kids helps avoid the kids who flame and freak out when they play online.
Example: learning baseball from my dad as a kid, if I had a tantrum in practice or even during a game, I'd get "the talk".
I follow that same rule with video games with my kids. If they freak out during a game or when they lose - they get "the talk" and sure enough as time goes by... they don't anymore."

I actually agree with the philosophy and 100% think that parents can make an impact by showing and teaching kids how to be graceful, humble and respectful, even in defeat. What do you all think?

I used to play GTA and Need for speed most wanted with my dad when i was like 8 or something on PS2.
GTA didnt work out so well, since the first 5 mins i played this game i ran over like 100 people, so he took away the CD for the game.
NFSMW played a few races, then we played Drag races i didnt knew what to do and he was constantly laughing about it and insisted on playing that stupid drag race.
4th time playing that stupid drag race i threw the controller in rage on the ground and broke it.
He beat the shit out of me.
Never played a video game with my father again.
