But if you stay up for more than 24 hours you receive an odd sort of biological high that provides initial clarity and energy and then settles down into a general sort of fog that dulls the impact of existence then crashes into a state of simultaneous anxiety and exhaustion.

Re: Freetalk Friday 1
GS and I adopted a 2 year old cat 2 years ago. He is my first cat. I have always had dogs. I did tons of research into how to make cats happy and feel secure, health issues, etc, before adopting him, but never once even had the thought that a cat would bring "toys" inside. Cats are supposed to keep rodents out, not bring them in!
Sam, our cat, has a flap so that he can go out whenever he wants. He is chipped, but not collared as collars can be dangerous. I'm not interested in limiting his freedom or causing him potential harm so locking his cat flap or putting a collar with a bell on him are not options to me.
I'm interested in how to get over my problem with him bringing in live mice. I need to adapt and change, but I'm not sure how. I have no fear of mice. Obviously, I don't want them indoors, but I don't have an issue seeing them outdoors or as pets, petting them, etc; thus, I don't think I have a phobia. It's the predator and prey thing that bothers me. I don't even watch nature documentaries that show animals being killed by other animals. I know it's nature and that it happens, I just don't like seeing it. Seeing it happen live, right in front of me, makes my heart pound, I shake, get clammy, can't think, feel ill - it's like I'm in fight/flight/freeze mode and am taking on the feelings of prey. Poor GS has to deal with it each time, while I frantically get as far away from the situation as possible.
I find it difficult to fully relax in the evening as I'm anticipating Sam to come in with a new toy. I'm nervous to come downstairs in the morning as I'm not sure what I'll be greeted with. It's not a daily occurrence. In the past 2 months, he's caught 5 mice. He typically only catches them in summer/fall so in the almost 2 years that we've had him, he's brought in maybe 15 mice. It's often enough for me, however, to be negatively affected by it and to have negative aftereffects that linger.
Trying to find advice for this online has proven to be impossible. GS had the idea of taking the live mouse back outside and forcing Sam to play with it outdoors instead of allowing him to kill it inside in the hopes that Sam will learn that outside "toys" stay outside. Additionally, I've decided to try spending time with the image of Sam holding a mouse in his mouth and when I get comfortable with that, moving on to him "playing" with it. I'm not sure what other mental exercises I could do or if that will actually help.
I know there's a lot of really smart people here who can potentially offer me some advice. I'm specifically tagging @Imperial Noob because I know he has also studied Psychology and am hopeful his studies weren't as narrow as mine.

I can understand not wanting dead animals inside. I think it is healthy to get used to the idea of how predatory animals behave. just like the knowledge of how slaughter houses operate for example.

He's literally solving our neighbor's mouse problem so it's actually great to let him outside for everyone involved, except @XeeleeFlowerVictor_swe wrote:Wut. The cat is bringing the trophy in the house because that's what all predators do, they bring the prey to the safest den they know. If the house wasn't the safest spot, the cat would take it elsewhere.
The collar with bells is the best solution, though not perfect either. The perfect solution is to not let the cat out. ^^

Re: Freetalk Friday 1
Hunting is his #1 hobby. Removing that from his life by way of bells isn't an option. Keeping him inside is even less of an option.
Re: Freetalk Friday 1
Idk if this could work, maybe if you build like a doghouse, except for the cat and train it to hide its prey there, outside, it might work.
Like those outdoors playhouses for kids.

He actually brought in a mouse just now and when I tried to steal it from him he ran back out with it. We then locked the door from the inside and he stood outside the door meowing to come back in. Opened the door and he left the mouse outside.
Feels like progress..

Well, it's certainly a hope that he can be trained to not bring them in, but after ~15 times...idk. Maybe it just takes longer for cats since it apparently goes against their entire nature.iNcog wrote:Can't cats be conditioned to certain things like dogs can? idk. Funny thing, while I opened this to respond, I decided to go upstairs and take out my eyes. Lo and behold, as I come back downstairs, I hear Sam making scuffling noises. Enter the hallway and see him going under the table with a mouse...Poor GS is on video chat playing games and I yell at him to fix it while I close the door leading upstairs and hide in the stairway covering my ears so I won't hear any squeaks.
Edit: lol, GS already posted in here

Wait, this stuff actually exists.
There are outdoors cathouses.
Maybe you can train the tomcat to leave the mouse in an outdoors cathouse.

Re: Freetalk Friday 1
Not 100% sure, but we do know that he has caught 1 on our neighbor's terrace since we saw it happen. We were sitting outside looking at the stars, saw/heard him jump on her terrace, he then jumped up on the edge of our terrace with a very large mouse in his mouth. This was the first mouse of the 6 mice he's caught in the past 2 months. Each mouse has been subsequently smaller so we're thinking that he's taking out a whole family.Mr_Bramboy wrote:Where are all the mouses coming from? My cats have never brought in a single mouse.
