What this doesn't account for is that you can't keep everyone employed because the "simpler" jobs will disappear, and that's all some people are good for.Amsel_ wrote:Imagine if instead of debating the merits of techno-dystopia versus communism, we just kept everyone employed, and paid them the same amount, but cut their work hours. I doubt we'll be at the point where there are no more "simple jobs" anytime soon. But I do support a job guarantee, which would alleviate all the issues unemployment causes in society, without having UBI's issue of giving people a reason to not work.Goodspeed wrote:What this doesn't account for is that you can't keep everyone employed because the "simpler" jobs will disappear, and that's all some people are good for, no offense.Amsel_ wrote:Imagine if instead of debating the merits of techno-dystopia versus communism, we just kept everyone employed, and paid them the same amount, but cut their work hours. Work days are getting shorter and shorter. We are getting more time off. Sometimes work can be soulsucking, im glad this trend is continuing.

No one said anything about soon. We're talking about a theoretical moment in the future.Amsel_ wrote:I doubt we'll be at the point where there are no more "simple jobs" anytime soon.Goodspeed wrote:What this doesn't account for is that you can't keep everyone employed because the "simpler" jobs will disappear, and that's all some people are good for, no offense.Amsel_ wrote:Imagine if instead of debating the merits of techno-dystopia versus communism, we just kept everyone employed, and paid them the same amount, but cut their work hours. Right, but what happens when simple jobs do disappear? What happens when you can only supply 10% of the population with a job? What do you have the other 90% do? Do you pay them to build houses of cards? But I do support a job guarantee, which would alleviate all the issues unemployment causes in society, without having UBI's issue of giving people a reason to not work.
A job guarantee sounds good on paper, and will work for a while, but it becomes impossible at a certain point.
Re: Freetalk Friday 1
The jobs in a job guarantee don't necessarily need to be productive, they just need to be money for some type of work. It can be as simple as writing birthday cards to people, or spending time with old people in nursing homes. These are things that will always be possible, regardless of automation.Goodspeed wrote:No one said anything about soon. Re: Freetalk Friday 1
It seems highly optimistic to think you can keep everyone employed when we are able to automate relatively complex jobs.
Re: Freetalk Friday 1
Automation has been been happening for hundreds of years and we've never had an issue with employment, I dont see us having any issues in the near future. New jobs have always popped up.

The problem is people expect me to be available 40 hours a week, when in reality if I cut out all the time I spend sitting around doing jack shite I could get all my work done in about 4-5 hours a weekvoigt1240 wrote:Work days are getting shorter and shorter. Agree, I think it'll be a 22nd or 23rd century problem.
But my guess is we'll see the beginning, and we'll see it become an important issue in politics.

not my fault if dummies can't get jobs, why should I be forced to pay for it?

Order something with soy sauce.
Then watch some action hero movie while eating a soy sauce dish and playing with your pokemons.

Also when did action movies become considered effeminate

Re: Freetalk Friday 1
Uhm, I think the soy meme is more about being a domesticated consoomerist guy who likes to play with his collection of Star Wars figurines, even tho he's like 25.
I don't think it's about effeminacy. It's more like an ironic commentary on life priorities in the 21st century.

I guess I'm domesticated in the sense that I'm capable of living with people without randomly attacking them
