I'm only here temporarily. The post office sent me here to help them clean mail boxes ahead of the election. Apparently people were pulling some sort of prank by stuffing them full of papers that said "Ballot Enclosed" so I've had to go around tossing them. Feels good to help the post office and safeguard the democratic process!

Imagine if instead of debating the merits of techno-dystopia versus communism, we just kept everyone employed, and paid them the same amount, but cut their work hours. Haha. That would be so crazy and weird.

This is what Marx predicted, that eventually automation would reach a point at which people wouldn't get paid less, but would work less for the same wages. He was writing in an age in which they still had an uber-optimistic view on human nature (influenced by the Enlightenment), so he thought people would simply have more time to engage in doing scientific research and artistic works. You know, all those things people did during the lockdown, when they spammed vidya gaems.

I do, but first, can you post who you are/aren't voting for in the 2020 elections thread and why? That means more to me than anything else. Because people I know and love are going to be hurt by what's about to happen, and saying that you don't care about results is completely insane to me. I legitimately want to know what you think about it.

You don't feel discussing the future is important? How about climate change? We're seeing the negative effects of both topics right now. UBI should absolutely be discussed. Automation will continue to take over jobs that were previously held by people. It's a very important discussion.

Something I'm more concerned about than UBI is the very idea of democracy itself. Hopefully the country that you've moved to will implement a UBI to deal with the eventual crisis of automation taking over white collar jobs, but the country I live in is currently trying to murder people who go against the regime. So that's sort of a bigger concern for me

Also the current regime supports climate change and wants it to get worse. But that's for some reason not the main thing people want to talk about

I can discuss plenty of things, but if you can't bring yourself to say you support one political party over another in the US then what's the point of any of this? I'm glad you live in a better country where you don't have to worry about stuff like this, but not all of us are that lucky. It really sucks, and acting like the results of the upcoming election aren't a big deal makes me angry because I know people who are going to be impacted by it
