Use of the word Literally
Use of the word Literally
I am disgusted by how it has now become acceptable to use the word literally for emphasis when in fact its not literally correct. When did this start happening and what can be done to stop its spread?

"Literally" is used for emphasis while not being literally true'. Get used to the times!

I'm going to literally kill someone if one more person doesn't use the word literally literally.

Re: Use of the word Literally
As Jam conveniently demonstrated, literally x2 is the new, true definition of literally, and literally x1 is merely an intensifier.

Re: Use of the word Literally
Just use the word "honestly" instead. Example sentence:
"Honestly, I hope you die."
"Honestly, I hope you die."

It's frustrating but also this is how languages evolve, although in this particular case I do not believe it will be successful, I do not believe the misuse of the word is effective, and it will eventually fall out of favor in speakers.

Maybe figuratively will catch on. I'm figuratively going to explode if you say that again.

I'm looking forward to the day when all we'll use is telepathic emojis and memes.

I'm literally looking forward to the day when we'll all use string literals to communicate.
Re: Use of the word Literally
This used to be more common back in the 90's. Then it became overused and the people that use it often tend to use it in an attempt to mislead you. Very similar to literally now. I noticed Wellhii uses honestly lots when stating his opinion.fightinfrenchman wrote:Just use the word "honestly" instead. Example sentence:

And everybody dies, so perhaps hope for something a little more interesting.
