Re: COVID-19 / Coronavirus Outbreak
Well, covid has like a case fatality rate of 0.01% atm, at least in the Netherlands. We are averaging almost 100k cases per day versus <10 deaths per day. Even the antivaxxers will have immunity by now (actually blood research showed that 97% of people have antibodies atm).

Re: COVID-19 / Coronavirus Outbreak
There's no point in ever predicting mass catastrophe, because even if you're right you won't have the chance to say "I told you so" since everyone will be dead/busy with the aforementioned catastrophe. Better to just predict that things will generally stay the same week to week and you'll be right the vast majority of the time

Re: COVID-19 / Coronavirus Outbreak
At this point I have stopped believing I can even catch covid tbh. The vaccine just works for me. Ive been working at a high school, seeing like 150 different kids every week with no masks or social distancing. A bunch of them ended up being positive and Im still testing negative. My girlfriend was in direct contact with a covid positive person, no masks or distancing, for 3 hours in an unventilated room while singing, at the point in time where the positive person was supposedly the most contagious. She tested negative for 5 consecutive days after that. So its over, at least for me. Its less of a worry than catching the flu at this point.
Re: COVID-19 / Coronavirus Outbreak
Same. I'm talking to people in closed spaces every day, without mask. They have the vax, I don't.
And I didn't get the virus, or I didn't notice if I got it.
Not even sure there's any point in getting the vax now.

Re: COVID-19 / Coronavirus Outbreak
I think many people have gotten omicron and not noticed it. And many of these self tests have really abhorent rates of false negatives, which is finally being talked about in my country. On the upside it seems like covid will be fully over by the time summer comes around.RefluxSemantic wrote: ↑12 Feb 2022, 00:00At this point I have stopped believing I can even catch covid tbh. Re: COVID-19 / Coronavirus Outbreak
The self tests I have been using supposedly have only a few percent false negative rate. The instruction manual usually tells you how it holds up against the pcr tests. Ive been doing about 3 self tests every week atm.

Re: COVID-19 / Coronavirus Outbreak
They are upto 85% accurate and that depends on viral loads. Someone who has a low viral load would be a false negative.

Apperantly India is getting B grade tests. Mine are 97% accurate according to the instruction manual.

They all are going to be accurate according to their own instructions.

I have quite a bit of trust in the medical information printed on the instructions of these tests. Its a reasonable trust given the extensive European legislation.

Re: COVID-19 / Coronavirus Outbreak
Honestly, the only way in which I can understand not having caught the virus is that the vaccines actually work. There's been a lot of anecdotal evidence about breakthrough infections, but most recent data suggests that vaccines still offer 70% protection. Maybe that protection is closer to 100% for certain individuals that meet certain conditions (ie young, healthy, naturally less susceptible to covid). Thats the only way in which I can understand how my girlfriend (who spent 2 hours standing next to someone who was covid positive in an unventilated room, while singing) did not catch covid last week.

What kind of restrictions do you have to deal with at the momentRefluxSemantic wrote: ↑12 Feb 2022, 21:28Honestly, the only way in which I can understand not having caught the virus is that the vaccines actually work. Re: COVID-19 / Coronavirus Outbreak
And I don't deny that, we also get tests which say they are 95% accurate but real world testing just shows that it is not possible. I agree that in ideal world in laboratory testing they could give 97% or whatever they print on it. But real world research shows that it is not possible. There are too many factors and human intervention at work. As a result on average they are 85% accurate based on data gathered. Say you are doing everything it is possible in your individual case it could be more. I am almost certain the packaging would read "upto 97%".RefluxSemantic wrote: ↑12 Feb 2022, 21:16I have quite a bit of trust in the medical information printed on the instructions of these tests.
