They spike in France because they were only counting hospital deaths until now, but yesterday included deaths in nursing homes which add ~800.

From an article I read:

"As of Thursday, the growth factor, calculated by dividing each day’s new cases by the new cases on the previous day, was again more than 1, pointing to continued exponential growth of cases. A growth factor of less than 1 can indicate the rate of new cases is slowing."

What a complicated way of saying that if new cases today are greater than new cases yesterday, then the rate of new cases is not decreasing

More new cases from one day to the next also doesn't always point to exponential growth. Could be linear growth.
