Eternals was ass

Please, it was a good movie. Although a tv series would have suited Eternals better in hindsight it was nonetheless a good movie. It doesn't feel like an outright Marvel movie but that's a good thing.

How do you feel about the other most recent 5 or so Marvel movies?

I haven't watched the latest Spider-Man (which should be good), but I liked none of the phase 4 movies. I liked the first part of Black Widow though. It started to be shite with the family reunion. So the latest Marvel movies I enjoyed would be Endgame and Captain Marvel I guess.

@princeofcarthage Yeah TV series format would be preferable. Still, the movie was bad. Guardians of the Galaxy did it much better.

How do you feel about the other most recent 5 or so Marvel movies?

I happened to watch all of the existing phase 4 films recently (last 3-ish months) and can deliver my takes. My baseline opinion of Marvel films in general is that they're pretty ok, people who love them a lot and people who hate them a lot are cringe. They're fine. You sign up for two hours of fun action and entertaining but trite fourth-wall humor, you wait around at the end to see which next film they're doing, and then you go on the internet to shitpost until the next one comes out.

This was the first film I saw in theaters since 2019's Knives Out and movie theater popcorn is really great. This movie was ok. I liked the central idea of an ancient aliens coming to Earth to protect humans from other aliens but finding out that they're the baddies, but I had a hard time buying into what the conspiracy actually ended up being. A lot of plot threads - Sprite being the way she was, humans being mean to each other but Eternals not being able to interfere, everything with Deviants - kind of got abandoned or hastily wrapped up once the main conflict came in, but those plot threads formed the entire first two thirds of the movie.

A while ago my college roommate told me that Captain America The Winter Soldier was a good film and that it was actually a spy thriller rather than a superhero movie. I watched it eventually and it turned out that yeah, it was pretty good and it was a spy thriller! So I came into this thinking we'd get another fun spy movie and then this just wasn't? It was really boring? I find most Marvel films to be enjoyable enough to at least watch but when they were all falling through the air at the end all I could think was "I wish this movie was over".

I think Awkwafina is cool and Marvel style jokes work well with her. Since the first part of the movie took place in San Francisco I could watch it and think "haha yes". Michelle Yeoh being in this film was not surprising and I think maybe the entire thing could be better if they took out all the Marvel stuff, had no rings at all, and just made a fun wuxia film with assassins and stuff. I thought it was strange that the dad's army showed up with like 5 cars but somehow way more than 5 cars' worth of people came out of them and also they easily defeated the village but they made sure to only capture rather than kill people despite being a ruthless assassin crime organization because they needed to work together. Possibly that one could have been worked on a bit. It's ok though the midcredits karaoke with Awkwafina was fun.

Spiderman No Way Home "The Big One" 2-3/4

I'm torn on this one, because on one hand I was legitimately happy to see Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in this and to have meaningful roles rather than quick nostalgia-bait cameos, but on the other hand the entire film is basically a memberberry, but on the other other hand I'm okay with that. Of the Garfield series, I only saw TASM2 but I liked it. The Raimi trilogy came out right at the age where I'd find it very appealing so seeing Tobey Maguire again was a delight.

BUT, I don't understand why huge parts of this film had to be predicated on characters being extremely dumb for no reason. Why didn't Tom Holland just keep these guys in jail while putting together cures? Why did they just let the uncured lizard dude stay in the truck? The entire plot of this movie wouldn't have happened if Peter and Dr. Strange spent like five minutes thinking about this before casting a spell that can apparently rip open the fabric of reality. I know they lampshade this on like three separate occasions but that's not going to cut it. They presented this as a quick throwaway joke but it ended up being the entire plot? When Peter was going to see Dr. Strange I thought he was just going to get a recommendation letter lol. Why can multiple cures be created by three dudes in a high school chemistry lab? Even if they are supposed to be smart? Minor complaint but it's not really obvious from the rules of Dr. Strange's spell that sending this people back regardless of their cured/uncured state won't just result in them immediately dying anyway. This entire plot seemed unnecessarily contrived, like they have to get rejected from MIT and can't find any other recourse besides altering reality and have to mess it up in an easily avoidable way and have to decide to try to cure them and Strange has to disagree and they have to let dangerous villains run around with minimal supervision while trying to cure them.

The entire second act was pretty boring. The major "point" of the movie hinged on "it's more important to save one life in front of you than to reduce life saving to a utilitarian calculus" which was also the entire point of the Thanos arc and Eternals (and others?). The "with great power comes great responsibility" line didn't really hit when Aunt May said it.

Anyway I still liked it.

This entire plot seemed unnecessarily contrived, like they have to get rejected from MIT and can't find any other recourse besides altering reality and have to mess it up in an easily avoidable way and have to decide to try to cure them and Strange has to disagree and they have to let dangerous villains run around with minimal supervision while trying to cure them.

Doctor Strange 2 was supposed to come out first but because of Covid this one had to go first and a bunch of stuff was reshot, that's why lol

I've decided I'm going to just watch every Willem Dafoe movie I guess. Just watched "The Loveless," and this funny Letterboxd review really sums it up, "Not really a movie so much as it is Willem Dafoe eating breakfast and going to a mechanic." Highly recommend

I liked the heavy atmosphere in this movie: very lovecraftian as many have noticed. Excellent acting. While it was definitely not a bad experience, I wouldn't re-watch it in the future.

As for its interpretation, I read here and there some theories but nothing that really convinced me ngl tbh

This is how I feel about The Revenant. Saw it in theaters and it was good but I don't want to sit through that for 3+ hours again (I don't think it was actually that long but it felt like it ngl)

It definitely looked great. I also remember thinking it was funny how everyone was talking about how Leo would finally get an Oscar after this and then Tom Hardy just gives a way better performance in the same movie

yeah, you can never be sure about such things these days, but I guess it wouldn't be the wisest choice to send just one man into such environment (what if he falls down the stairs by accident); plus you could see Pattinson & Dafoe subbing the other 2 lighthouse men at the beginning of the film

So the Oscars were really boring and definitely absolutely nothing interesting came from them EXCEPT that Dune won the most of all the films this year, mostly by virtue of looking nice and sounding nice, which were both true. I remember liking the film but not loving it, but I'm inclined to watch it again now. It along with The Green Knight are films that I spent a lot of time thinking about even months after having seen them. I've seen two of Villeneuve's previous movies, Arrival and Blade Runner 2049: I liked Arrival a lot, but thought Blade Runner was incredibly boring (I haven't seen the original). Now I kind of want to give Blade Runner another chance.

story time more than a decade ago there was a guy in my clan called DukeLeto, whose name I didn't know the reference of until I saw Dune. DukeLeto was a permanent conscript - his actual skill level was around 2nd lt, but for whatever reason he never played a single rated game. At some point in time Goodspeed made an AoE3 knowledge quiz on AgeSanc (questions like how do you micro 5 musk vs 5 musk, which civ wins this matchup, etc.). We decided to troll Goodspeed by taking the quiz (he'd pm you the answers afterwards) and then feeding the answers to DukeLeto, who took the quiz and got an extremely high score. Absolutely destroyed with facts and logic.

I have decided I do not like Dune for its personal connotations. I have never spent time thinking of a movie after the day of except Kaufman films and none more than Synecdoche, New York.

That’s only half true I spend time thinking of other films after however thinking of thinking of films that’s only Kaufman and Star Wars, for other reasons, lightsabers go swoosh.
