Stargazing
Last weekend while on the Basement cabin trip I was really enjoying getting to look at the stars away from light pollution. But according to a light pollution map I just found there's nowhere in Pennsylvania that is truly ideal for looking at the night sky.
I'm looking for someone to help me plan a trip (cc @XeeleeFlower ) to somewhere in the continental US where I can comfortably enjoy some nice stargazing, preferably as cheaply as possible.

Lol at how pronounced the 100th meridian is.
I saw the night in Africa. Nebraska is also a pretty decent place to do it. Washington state has unpolluted areas.

Do you want to be able to drive somewhere, or is flying okay? Northern Michigan would be a relatively easy drive and it's really beautiful there. If you enjoy lakes, you will love it. There's still a bit of light pollution, but it's probably your best option if you don't want to fly.
I did a quick look on airbnb. I chose the following places based upon location (this is the area I would choose to stay - I've been to this area many times and love it), the price, and with the assumption that you would travel with friends. I chose these dates because the Perseids peak around this time so your stargazing experience will be maximized.
Lake House - my favorite option and I want to go.
closer to Bellaire
There's also this, but I don't think it's as private as the other options so I probably wouldn't choose it.
If you don't mind flying somewhere, then you can go pretty much anywhere out west as long as you avoid the bigger cities. This could pose a problem unless you plan on renting a car.

Re: Stargazing
Quite useless for you, but I've had an awesome aurora (although not as pronounced as on pictures) and stargazing experience on a frozen lake in the lapland region of Finland. A big city was nowhere near and the small village we stayed in only had a few lights on. That was cool.

@XeeleeFlower Thank you, this is very helpful. It's like an 11 hour drive from where I am but maybe it would make a good road trip.

Well we could find other things on the way to break it up and make it a whole thing.evilcheadar wrote:So many hoursh I thought you hated long driveshfightinfrenchman wrote:@XeeleeFlower Thank you, this is very helpful. One of the few things not good about chattanooga is too much light pollution for stargazing even if you get far away from the city.
Re: Stargazing
I used to be into stargating, but then I had a bad experience with the Goa'uld, and it kind of turned me off from the whole thing.
