I hate this game, but can't stop playing it.

Yeah not much of a tutorial lol

The gist:
- The number at the top of your screen (and below your name) is your strength
- The higher your strength the better your defense. This means that having a high enough number not to become a target is important. Low-strength neighbors are a potential target
- You use your strength when attacking. The amount used is controlled by the bar at the bottom. If not all of the used strength was needed for the attack, the remainder is returned when the expansion is done. This is often the case when attacking very weak targets, small islands or empty space
- Defender's advantage seems to be about 2:1, meaning if you attack someone with 100k they lose about 50k (and the territory ofc)
- The primary way your strength grows is interest. This happens every game tick and grows your strength by the interest percentage in the top right box
- The interest percentage grows when you get bigger in size, and diminishes as your strength gets higher. When interest reaches zero, your strength is maxed out and will stop growing (meaning the bigger you are the higher your max, and the faster your strength grows)
- The secondary way your strength grows is based on your size. This happens every 10 ticks, when the little bars next to your strength at the top of your screen reach full. It's therefore often good to time your attacks so that you are at your biggest just as they reach full, especially in the early game

Also, you can enable emotes before you go ingame via the button in the bottom left. The arrow is especially helpful if you want to communicate to people that you want to gang up on someone.

I'm playing as Gouda, prefer to play world or europe maps so you might find me there

I'd add World is more challenging than Europe, Caucasus and Americas; I never reach more than 300k on World. Team modes are an easier way to win.

You'll find me playing as Straight Outta Wuhan on one of them.

The early game is a lot about pouncing on the right targets. If you play it right you can be consistently in the top 5 biggest players after the "bot phase" unless you get attacked by a noob (non-beginners won't attack you in the early game as long as you don't massively overextend). If you just chill and build up your strength after that, and only attack weak targets, you shouldn't become a target yourself. But knowing when to pounce on which target takes some practice. One tip is that bots use way too much of their strength to attack, so waiting until they do and then attacking them while their defense is low is a cheap way to gain territory in the early game.

Doing okay but I think I'm about to die. I think the trick is to just never invest in big fights until your interest reaches 0 and to only attack smaller nations and nations that are attacking.

Yeah that doesn't seem winnable unless like two of your neighbors kamikaze into the big guy.
You could try pointing some arrows at the big guy, see how that pans out. Sometimes people are actually smart enough to team up in this kind of situation

This game is strangely soothing. Props to whoever made the graphics for this. Does anyone know the best starting strategy? So far, I've been expanding immediately, waiting for the tick, expanding 20-30%. I couldn't quite figure out what gives the most resources and land in single player trials.

Best borders so far:

I put it at 50% at the start, expanding around the 7th tick. Then when attacking bots lower it to about 20%. I tend to aggressively attack bots in the early game, not really caring whether my strength is lower than neighbors, because attacking players in the bot phase is a lose-lose situation so I expect them not to. You do have to make sure you don't get to like half their strength but 2/3 just for the sake of getting that early size is acceptable imo. Then you can sit and build strength faster than everyone around you. There is ofc a fine line between that and overextending tho

Not sure if this is optimal but seems to work ok

Would you rather attack someone who has similar power as you but has literally never attacked you or team up with said person to attack a bigger person who has been constantly attacking you? If the former, you're an idiot.

Attacking person with similar power will be suicide, right?
Fine line to something great is a strange change.
