I don't think Mazzy Star is depressing either, tbh, I see them as part of a hippie undercurrent that was going against the grunge/alternative/noisy mainstream scene of the 90s. The acoustic guitars, all the strumming and dreamy vocals, it all sounds very hippie to me, only the psychedelic and rosy outlook on the world is missing. I see it more like meditative music. They adopted this indie rock streak so they could appear like they belonged to the scene, that they weren't just some retro band. Depressing (but good quality stuff) is Portishead, imo. Or some underground, borderline act like Nový Svět. But I get what you mean. The Cure were part of the bleak late 70s/early 80s, like the The Specials' Ghost Town. There was probably some economic crisis back then. Techno also came out of the same gloomy breeding ground. When people lose jobs and prospects look grim, you can hear that in the music they are making.
Uhm, U2 is not very original in sound, yeah, though they're not completely unoriginal either. "The Edge"'s guitar sound evolved away from the 80s influences into something unique and new (to me it sounds boring, though) that influenced other bands later. You can find that sound in the Kings of Leon's songs, imo.

Yep, the Cure probably were one of those bands that had a greater impact by influencing other bands rather than being very successful themselves. got to love the 70s, there was so much meaning to read into the text. Nöwadays there are better beats, but not so much reason to listen to.
