I gave it a try and watched the 10 first episodes with a lot of effort on my part. How come it's so bad and so popular at the same time? Is it one of these anime that get better after the 995th episode?

Probably just not your cup of tea. lots of people with good taste don't like it. it's its own story, if you aren't a fan of it then there's no pointing in forcing yourself to try to like it

no, you were not supposed to provide a sensible answer to my hostile remark.
Fine, then what are you favorite anime/manga? Gimme your top 5, so I can identify a pattern.

The early episodes were still a work in progress. The Arabasta saga was the first big serious story. East blue saga was mediocre indeed.
One piece is quite unique in the world of manga.

I tried not to read the spoilers and held out until now. Finally read the chapter.

It looks like Luffy did genuinely... die? I feel like there will be some sort of resurrection or something? Maybe something to do with his fruit?

Break next week ugh makes me wanna die.

edit: it might be highly advanced haki where he faked his own death by making his voice disappear or something.

I feel like it's his strength of haki that brought Luffy back to life, and triggered the fruit awakening

I've been reading up on theories. This is the first time I've ever done so so fervently but here's what I think:

I think Luffy's fruit is not Paramecia rubber, but a mythical zoan. Monkey King Fruit, something of the sort. That kind of fruit, and its subsequent awakening, would be what I would regard as a reasonable ass pull. Whatever the actual abilities of the fruit and the relation to Joyboy, if Luffy's fruit isn't actually the gomu gomu then I could see it being something else that has resurrection properties.

Chapter 1014: Kaido queries the specific name of Luffy's fruit and laughs.
Chapter 1037: The 5 elders specifically mention the name of a fruit was unique and misleading. The world gov gave this fruit a unique name. "It hasn't awakened for centuries"
Chapter 1017: Shanks stole Luffy's fruit from a government ship. It was a serious deal and that's why whoswhos was thrown into prison.

Another note: Blackbeard's specific interest in Luffy's fruit that was mentioned in Dressrosa I think.
Another other note: Doflamingo wondering "can rubber even do this?" in his fight against luffy

The relationship between Joyboy and the fruit, I'm not sure of, or if there is even one at all. I'd think that there isn't. But i think Luffy won't die and I think it's his unnamed fruit that will save him.

Why stretchy? Well Sun Wukong would be the inspiration of this "monkey king" fruit and this monkey from asian mythology (I believe Chinese) had a staff that could extend at will. Just like Luffy.

Good video on it (shit thumbnail tho):

Everything seems to show towards Luffy's fruit being something else. Especially, since the whole arc is about momotaro's tale. (Luffy=monkey, yamato=inu, marco=pheasant, momo=momo, kaido=oni).
Also, recently I came across this JoyBoy inspiration story and this Hanuman idea. The latter is insane and appears to shockingly fit as a glove.

I am very curious to see how Oda tackles this deterministic vs free will dichotomy, which is very much underlined rn. Luffy seems to be the embodiment of free will, yet, he is having to deal with an "inherited" will, fulfilling a prophecy situation.
