how often should i change my oil

Well I was posting in the General section but for reasons that aren't really explained my threads got moved here.

5-6 hours of driving is like 1/3 of your day. You may be paying less in costs, but you're paying more in time that you could have used otherwise.

Holy cow your a badass, I see you playing aoe and on the esoc forums frequently, all the while commuting 5 hours to school, doing schoolwork, and making objects with 3-d printer!

I simply cant afford school lol I dont want to take out loans either... rent on campus or in same city is 1800-2k a month, and my gas costs amount to 500 a semester (3-4 months)

@cheadar, I dont study during school, I study ahead in an education plan during breaks. Having an eidectic memory also helps ^^.

I am going to have to agree with Gibson and iNog on this one. As a mechanical engineer who has taken part in resolving hydraulic oil related failures, I feel qualified in saying the question you asked is very very complicated. In heavy machinery that uses hydraulics, oil cleanliness and condition is of critical importance. This applies to car engines too. Your oil serves to lubricate and transfer heat build up within your engine. In an engine, there are many many metal parts that rub together. These metal parts gradually "microchip" away as this rubbing occurs. This is how your engine wears out. Luckily oil reduces the friction and slows down this wear, but it is still occurring. Contaminates inside the engine which can be the result of many things including these metal chips serve to increase the friction acting as abrading agents. These contaminates can also cause the oil to loose some of its protective properties. Changing your oil and oil filter serve to remove these contaminates and refresh the lubricating properties of your oil. Luckily, amazing strides have been made in the last 20-30 years resulting in far superior oils that can last longer as well as engines which have been built to tighter tolerances resulting in an extended design life.

Here in lies the rub. Predicting oil life is difficult to do. Factors including engine age, condition, climate and driving habits can all have an impact on oil life. Additionally it is in the lube shop's best financial interest to recommend an extremely short oil life span (3000 miles). Further more, and oil shop may open itself up to liability if engine failure occurs as a result of old oil based on the shops recommendations. Ultimately, the company that manufactured your car probably knows best about oil change intervals. These intervals vary widely. It should be noted that frequent oil level checks should also be performed because leaks can develop in many place.

well dr. d1ck said something similar, he said some can go past 10,000 miles without any issues. I mean i will probably change it soon but i would imagine it's not causing any damage. you should be familiar with the mitsubishi galant it is quite the reliable car. i've taken it on multiple adventures and it is still going fine

The galant is no longer going fine and will be heading to the scrap yard soon :(
