Ask the Basement Players Anything (Interview)
This thread is dedicated to basically having you guys ask us, the basement players, anything. I'm sure many people have questions about the basement games/the people who play in the basement/the basement itself so ask below.
Address your questions to one of us specifically, me, evil cheadar, gustavus, lord hiney, Dr. D1ck, General Genitals, Dopple Topple, Phallus maximus, or Adam. Not all of them have forum accounts but I will reach out to them to try to get them to answer your questions.

1. We range in age from around 15-24
2. Yes, we almost exclusively play it (occasionally we play fun scenarios like shark attack)
3. Evil cheadar - ottos/India, gustavus - British/Japan, adam - Russia, lord hiney - France, dopple topple and Dr. D1ck - German, phallus maximus - France/ports, general genitals - France, me - I have no explicit favorite, I play Russia France Germany and Ports all frequently. But I love playing dutch even though they not good
4. When I played Sioux i used epic dog box to kill both of Adams factories in 1 min 20 secs, I might even write an analysis of that game some time. But yes opri boxes get used frequently by various people

lol. you have no idea. most of the time I will only yell at evil cheadar or gustavus jokingly. But others in the basement get angrier at different things. when stakes are high yelling is inevitable.

Rage in the basement is common. After all there is reputation and history on the line with data recorded in the big excel file we call "the stats"

Usually, my flavor of basement rage is when I'm forced to defend myself against ridiculous comments about my gameplay when I'm head and shoulders above 75% of the basement and a head above the remaining 25%.

yes there is a pool just a lite bit outside the basement with a gazebo next to it. We have actually played games in the gazebo before, and in the summer we are considering taking our laptops into the pool on floats and playing a whole game of aoe on the water!

Best player is hard to quantify. Probably gustavus or cheadar but I'm not far below them, and it depends on civ/how we are feeling a specific day.
How we decide teams is a whole thing itself, I'll let cheadar explain

Todays system for making teams involves a chart developed by me while I was taking a class over the summer. This chart at a minimum puts into numbers the balance of a proposed team based on individual player skill, civ strength, and player civ adeptness numbers. The first draft has actually been quite successful. So this is how it works:
One column has a ranking of each basement player's basic skill level with the game, the highest skill number is currently a 3 while the lowest is 2.2
The next column attaches a number to each civ in particular(As a treaty civ). This is the column most people on here would disagree with, but is currently associated with a separate basement meta which one can clearly see with china ranked so low. The highest ranked civ has a value of 3 while the lowest is 2.2
The final column is the "civ- adeptness" column and is a value unique to each player and how good they are perceived as being with each civ. the lowest value is 1 and the highest is 1.2
The methodology with these columns is to multiply the values from each of the 3 columns for each player to get their overall balance number. The closer the two teams' balance sums are, the closer the game should be. We found that a difference of 1 or less results in a balanced game. I believe the four hour "epic game" that Frenchman brought up here had an obscenely small difference in team values when I calculated it months afterwards using the chart I developed.

I frequently suggest picking teams and civs out of a hat for a random game, however it gets shot down every time.

Re: Ask the Basement Players Anything (Interview)
i look for games that I think have a balance. looking at eso rank (also looking at % wins and number of games played) and look at civ matchups themsevles.... like i would not have a team go up against spain or france vs china. or india vs port. (well actually i dont play games with china or france in them)

You should be willing to take more matchups! It's in the Basement game spirit to try something new!

I'd totally do 4v4 random losing team gets firing squaded. It would never pass however. It'd be more fun and intense than you think.

Re: Ask the Basement Players Anything (Interview)
I like match ups that are decided by skill and strategy not civ unbalances. Its not fun to fight spain with china and its not even fun really being spain... pretty much can just spam lancer and a few skims china have no way to deal with it. I sometimes fight ports with india because everyone plays them and i play india, but its not a good match up because india has no counter to mortars. France is just super lame in hands of skilled player its not even fun, and chinas too OP for teams.
