Farewell after 14 years!
Hey friends
After 14 long years, I have decided to formally put this game behind me. Getting married in the next couple of months and I'm at a point in my life and career where I feel I can no longer responsibly play aoe3 (I tend to get too hooked and will binge 10-20 games a week) that I must finally put it behind me. This game has been an enormous source of fun for most of my life and I wanted to take a moment to thank the community and reflect on some highlights.
2005-2008
Golden time of AOE, but ultimately a massive noob. Spent a lot of time doing lame Jannisary rushes. Game was incredibly imbalanced as ESO pushed out TWC / TAD before balancing AOE3, and we saw fun strats such as:
- German merc FF / war wagon spam
- Abus were even more OP than now
- Iro Great House FI
- Dutch Stadhouter FI
- Sioux
- China Hand Mortar FF
Honourable mentions go to:
- Entire LoSt / SkWzZ Clans (for different reasons)
- TsC Clan
- iamgrunt / glouk / ourk / starsky, and a few of the other old pros.
- RTS-Sanctuary admins / community
- Total of 4000 posts and ~200 recs posted on rts-sanctuary
2009-2012
Probably my best period. Spent a lot of time gaming here instead of studying for High school exams (fortunately I still did OK, though I wouldn't recommend it). At my peak I was top 10 1v1 ELO in the world and hit my highest PR of ~38 with primarily French / Port / British. I also developed a strong proficiency in Otto, wrote some guides, and was generally the #1 ranked Otto player in 1v1 for a period of about 2 years. Wrote a couple otto guides which are actually still pretty useful today, and I suspect most folks can get to PR ~33-35 using those principles.
Honourable mentions go to:
- pk clan for being a strong presence in the community
- Goodspeed for ushering in the next few metas
- H20 for staying with the game as many of the old pros started to fall off.
- Best win: H20 for resigning at 10 seconds in a 1v1 India (me) vs Brit (him) on Yukon. Technically a win, so I will take it.
2013-present
Played on-and-off here, mostly 3v3 randoms. A lot of fun times. 2013-15 were pretty boring / dark, but the game has been reenergised in the past few years by ESO-community.net. Played on / off continually here where I would build my PR up to 32-33 over the course of 1-2 months, then quit playing for 6-7 months. Did this over and over, and proud to say that Imaintained a pretty good 1v1 win streak laming ottos. I look at this period most fondly - particularly the last couple of years due to:
Honourable mentions go to:
- The 3v3 random community. Have had some epic games and - without caring about PR or ratings or teams - have had some of my fondest memories. Coming back after losing your base at the 50 minute mark because your french team mate finally makes it to imperial is a great feeling that few other AOE experiences can match.
- Again - entire ESO-community for the amazing tournaments, streaming, etc. Never played with folks like interjection but always enjoyed watching those matches
- SirMusket for making me feel a rage and passion that I hadn't in many years
- All the eso-community folks who also helped me rage at SirMusket (Special shoutout to breezy, gryphoon, etc. - you know who you are).
Just wanted to reitarate my thanks to everybody. This has been a great community and I will genuinely think of you all and this game fondly for many years to come. Maybe I will one day come back for AOE4 / AOE3 DE for a sneaky 3v3 random, but very unlikely given the trajectory my life is going.
Wish you all the best with all your endeavours!

official statements like these never work, true quitters don't even care enough to formulate a proper farewell

I've had gaps in the past of 6-12 months, and those were without having an "official statement"

Oh thank god, thought this was a @Mitoe farewell when I saw the title!
In all seriousness, good luck with your life. I have been playing off an on since 2005 and life makes it hard to play routinely.
Either way I am sure you will be playing again at some point, it's hard to give it up entirely.

This sounds more like a humble brag, with the marriage and all
Anyway, gl hf, I enjoyed your Otto guides back in the day. Never forget Ottoman Winter Guide!

Good luck with your marriage and career. It's always sad to see old names leave the community, but I understand and respect your decision -- as sad as it can be, sometimes we have to let go of things we love so that we can begin the next chapter of life.
I hope you have a life full of love, laughter, and adventure. Godspeed, @VooDoo_BoSs

Come on, itâs not actually good bye. Not like when you get married youâre immediately banned from playing video games.

Re: Farewell after 14 years!
Thanks everybody for your kind words!
@deleted_user5 - I will always remember flaming sir musket fondly.
@dicktator_ - Yes! Unfortunately my work and training takes up a lot time these days, so if I play more than 1-2 games a week, then by definition I am sacrificing either sleep, time with my partner, time training, or generally more productive activities (eg: reading). If I play 10 games a week, then it has been a very BAD week for me and I have likely sacrificed a lot of the above.
@Zutazuta - that's true, but as above it's more due to me needing to prioritise more productive activities and I'm not able to play in moderation. If I log on to play one game, I end up playing 5, and all the other things I could have done that day don't get done :(
@gryphoon94 - cheers mate!
