Analyzing Over 500 Games of WoL
Click Here to See the Analysis
Hey all! I've been around this forum for a little over a year now and I love to see how integrated data is into ranking players and the setup of tournaments. It made me feel a little inadequate for WoL having no comparable data in its 11 years of existence. So I decided to gather together a variety of sources, including our Multiplayer Form filled out by players after matches, our Gameplay Playlist on YouTube, automatically-reported ESO games from the AoE3 Elo site, videos from Twitch and the occasional Forum post or Discord message.
With all my data combined I was able to put together a list of over 500 multiplayer matches that I used to rank WoL's players, civs, maps, and more! (I don't think fans on this forum will be surprised about our number 1 player)
You can find all of the data visualized in a nice format on this Data Studio report, or if you hate beautifully presented data, you can see some of the highlights from the data in the spoiler below.
Total Games over Time
How Long Does a WoL Match Take?
Most Popular Cultures, total and adjusted for number of civilizations
Civilization Win Percentage
Most Popular Maps
Elo of All WoL Players over Time
Let us know your thoughts in the comments! What did you think of the data? What should we do with what we found? What other data should we look at in the future?

I'm honestly not sure of that, I'm sure someone who plays frequently would know better (despite being a developer, I've never actually played online). Most of the playerbase is on GameRanger, which is a bit harder to track, but I've heard from @WickedCossack that it can be easier to find a WoL match than an unmodded match at times!

@milku3459 From my experience playing WoL online it can vary a lot. Gameranger has a healthy population, but mostly from Latin America which is why I rarely play on there as Im usually asleep then. The steam group has over 200 members and keeps growing. The steam group members seem to be from lots of different parts of the world so I can usually find someone to play with during the day or evening. Its usually better to make some WoL friends that are in the same time zone so you can play regularly. In peak GR hours(around 12am- 5am GMT) you will easily find a game there, its just whether that fits with your schedule or not.

Lol, it's a little hectic I'll admit. It's essentially the same as the Elo Rating Charts on the JP Community site but for all players (that I have Elo data for, which is a little over 100) on one chart. On the data studio report certain players are highlighted to help their ratings stand out.
just kidding, this guy is a really weird person . Don't try to download his mod or it will take (I assume) a week and 75% of the the memory of your computer
