Knuschelbär's Comeback: Mitoe vs Knuschelbär Game 2 Recap
The Grand Tours finals are this Sunday, July 1st, and will be casted by _H2O and Interjection. We hope you all tune in for what promises to be a great showdown, but first, let’s see how one of our two finalists got here.
Background
Knuschelbär did not have a good first game.
Playing carelessly greedy in a Dutch mirror against the reigning grand champion, Mitoe immediately went on the front foot and punished Knuschelbär’s greedy FF with a Hussar raid. While the numbers of villagers and resources lost were small, mirrors are decided in the minutia. And as Knuschelbär would soon find out, it is very hard to come back in a mirror once even slightly behind.
The game continued, skirms and ruyters danced around in varying shades of blue, but the outcome was never in doubt once Mitoe pulled off the early raid. A 3 villager lead snowballed into 10. Knuschelbar’s forces bravely held the line, but he was simply outplayed by a player who had not lost a competitive series in quite a long time. Going into game 2, Mitoe had every right to expect the night to end with a ticket to the finals.
Boxed In
In game 2, Knuschelbär gambled on a Portuguese FI against Mitoe’s Iroquois. Once again, the overly greedy opening left Knuschelbär vulnerable to a cavalry raid at the 6 minute mark. Kanya horsemen were at the gates of Portugal before Knuschelbär even had a military building made. Mitoe leapt out to a 12 villager lead and successfully boxed Knuschelbär in, negating the Portuguese map control oriented strategy by forcing him to place his TC’s very close together.
Desperate to eek out some sort of map control, Knuschelbär turned to his fort wagon. He plopped down the foundations of Fort Immanuel in the centre of the map... right next to a party of Forest Prowlers.
Now luckily for Knuschelbär Forest Prowlers, even with a 4x attack against unfishished buildings, are not terribly effective siege units. Fort Immanuel does go up, but Knuschelbär has to sink even more resources into repairing it, and he has basically no army to defend it.
Or his town, for that matter...
The Siege of Fort Immanuel
Now mind you, this is EP Iroquois. The Iroquois army is not the Aenna spamming monstrosity that it is in the base game. Here they more closely resemble a european civ, and Mitoe’s Prowler/Kanya composition is effective in open battle, but lacks knockout potential. With a fort and 3 TC’s up, Knuschelbär is turtling for his life. Mitoe wisely decides to avoid the big strong buildings and sends his army sweeping down to the south, where Portuguese villagers ply away at a mine, blissfully unaware of the hellfire the teal-loving Canadian is about to unleash.
Knuschelbär reacts a moment too late. The villagers are all lost. He wheels his army up to the north and barricades the surviving villagers up in the nearest Town Center. Mitoe chases him all the way back across the map, ignoring the snipers in the Town Centers and pushing the ragged, outnumbered Portuguese army all the way back to Fort Immanuel. He finishes off the cassadores there, and then Mitoe makes a huge decision.
Instead of pushing back into town, he sieges the fort.
It’s a welcome reprieve for Knuschelbär. While he can do nothing but watch his fort go down, and all the villagers inside are lost, he begins to bleed the Iroquois army out and stall. He finally manages to stabilize, and rips off a raid of his own with Dragoons. Two factories come in from the home city and suddenly his 10 villager deficit turns into a 10 villager lead. Economically, the tide is turned. Militarily, Mitoe still has all the advantage.
The clock is ticking. Both players know what’s coming next.
Mitoe has one chance to finish the job.
Rams vs. Guns
Knuschelbär played this game masterfully. He never panicked, he stuck to his economic strategy, and he successfully delayed Mitoe long enough to get into a favorable position. But there’s one last storm coming for him. Mitoe placed a siege workshop right next to his town, and cues up rams to add some devastating, turtle-ending siege ability to his already superior army. Knuschelbar cues up Heavy Cannons of his own and digs in for one last stand.
The chat at this point seemed pretty split on who had the advantage, but _H2O offered a bit of prophetic wisdom.
“I have never seen Rams win a game.”
(Obviously this man doesn’t know about Jared Goff... Heh. NFL jokes... To a primarily European audience... I’m sure that will go over well...)
Mitoe pushes in from the South again, and Knuschelbar plays it perfectly. Dragoons take out the Kanyas, the Cannons take out the Prowlers. It’s the classic “I pulled a Portugal Age IV win out of thin air” composition, and one of my favorites. All the momentum now on Knuschelbar’s side, he breaks out, adds in Elmeti for even more power, and obliterates what’s left of Mitoe’s army in the center of the map.
Aftermath
Knuschelbär found a second gear halfway through that game. He never looked back after, and rattled off another 2 wins in a row to stun Mitoe and stake his claim in the finals of the Weekend Grand Tours. There he will face Kaiserklein. Come back tomorrow to find out how he stamped his ticket to the finals.
And be sure to tune in July 1st for the grand finals!

Wasn't @Garja the one advocating the use of dodge rams?
Re: Knuschelbär's Comeback: Mitoe vs Knuschelbär Game 2 Recap
Not if you have to build an artillery foundry and make them, let alone without sending 1200 res, lol. Funny enough 4 rams might have won Mitoe the game when he had an army and Knucklebob didn't.

What's your opinion on flail elephants? @_H2O
Re: Knuschelbär's Comeback: Mitoe vs Knuschelbär Game 2 Recap
Untrainable. Don’t move fast enough, don’t have any range, don’t do anything except seige. If you can seige something with flails you probably already won without making them.
