We’ve seen some incredible Age of Empires 3 over the last month with the conclusion of the New World Championship and the Tri-Civ Cup last weekend, but now--in keeping with the theme of the Grand Tour--it’s time for something a bit different. This week, players will start with a full-blown mid-Colonial economy... with an additional 25 pilgrims spawning alongside your ordinary settlers (good luck keeping that crowd under control!).
Aside from that, gameplay remains unchanged, and the civilization restrictions will be the same as the New World Championship where you may play any civ you like until you win with it, at which point it may not be played again. For an example, see the spoiler tag below:
- Once you have won with a civilization, you may not use it again for the rest of the series. Losing a game does not disable a player’s civilization from being played again.
- For the 1st game in a series, players will agree on a civilization matchup. After that, the winner of the previous game will select their civilization first. This pick is final and will be locked in. Their opponent will then pick their civilization afterwards.
- In a Best-of-3, you must win with 2 different civilizations.
- In a Best-of-5, you must win with 3 different civilizations.
/////
It’s important to keep in mind that these are in fact not settlers and will not contribute to your settler build limit, so fear not: civs like Ottomans will indeed still be able to produce villagers at the start of the game (also Dutch with 75 vills anyone?). Additionally, you will be housed with 30+/10 population at the start of the game, so have fun managing that!
First order of business will probably be to throw down 3 houses. Wait… or do you just age up ASAP and make houses in transition?!
Eitherway, 3 vils is probably not good enough anymore. So I guess we send eco theory. Or is saving the shipment just better as we’ll be up to Colonial so quickly?
Hold on... with 30 vills you can probably just click straight up to the Fortress Age upon hitting Colonial. *goes to test it* Yeah you can do that. So that’s a thing. Age fast and you can be Age III by about 3:00
Eitherway, once in the Fortress Age wood crates and military shipments will probably still be quite good. But with such a strong starting eco, upgrades are probably strong too. There’s probably a lot of room for different builds and strategy.
Oh crap. How fast can you revolt with Otto? What have we done

We may ban Ottoman just before the tournament begins. It is a consideration. Do not be surprised.

To make this event fair for everybody, and diversify our match-up potential, I suggest that Germans start with 25 extra settler wagons.

A few years ago, interjection wanted to give Germany a free uhlan in age 1, what's your opinion about this?

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you're looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let me play otto, that will be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you and I will kill you.

Japan can hunt, iro will have a crazy eco, dutch will have higher eco potential... lots of cheese coming up bois
Re: The $200 ESOC Weekend Pilgrimage - Settings Live on Smackdown Patch now!
I’m not even sure that Japan would want to hunt too much, otherwise they lose shrine income. Will be very nice early on though.
I don’t think Otto will actually be OP.
If anything I think that most likely every civ just goes straight to Fortress and it might just play out like a normal game from there.

Why couldn't we have had the standard TriCiv tourney August 4th.

Should have played on your laptop, kaiser won the tournament off his laptop, so it's no excuse.

I can roll a ball down a ramp and have a good idea of where it will land, how far it will travel, and how long it will take, but I am not a ball, and I am not being rolled down a ramp (I don't think).
Re: The $200 ESOC Weekend Pilgrimage - Settings Live on Smackdown Patch now!
Do Brits still get vills if they're popped? And I guess China's age1 would still just be building two villages.
I'm curious about the theory behind starting with 25 extra vills though. Would economic disparities still be proportional, just on a higher level? Or would the relative cheapening of things like age-ups and technology close the gap for weak-eco civs, or maybe it would further empower strong-eco civs? I wonder how the people using a supercharged standard build-order will fair against those using build-orders specifically designed for this format.
I can imagine age3 timings being the most common tactic players use. Germany could probably quickly go up to age2, and immediately click up again for age 3; they could save their shipments, and use their starting crates and 400w from the age up for houses and maybe a market. After clicking up to age 3, they'd probably want to chop wood for a military building. Just imagine one of those scary German age 3's with war wagons, skirms, and uhlan getting all up in your face less than six minutes into the game. But how good is all that when you get hit with jan/abus less than three minutes into the game? Maybe the most common tactic will actually be an age 2 play that naturally flows into aging up further? Or maybe throwing down a dozen layers of walls (which are now relatively cheaper) and cruising straight up to age 4 or 5?

Well look at iro for example with those politicians added, forest prowlers, musket riders and cuirassiers/elite kanya at only a few minutes in with travois making the situation even stronger for them, idk I'd personally rank iro as top in this format.
Other potentials are sioux, crazy eco and no housing problems to sort out
Dutch- 75 vill potential and banks... gonna be strong
India- once they get their houses down that slow start problem is gonna be gone, but possibly still too slow to deal with a german/dutch/iro fortress timing.
Otto- op units immediately, fast ageup. Gonna be housed a lot i expect
Ports. Good grief why is no one talking about how ridiculous ports is going to be with their slow start completely negated.
Russia. 100 strelets at 4 minutes.
Wait...
Oh
So like, every civ benefits
Id be interested to see british vs india in this format in particular, I'm curious to see how that would play out since both can't ff really but will want to go fortress quickly...
