ESOC Patch 8.1.0.0 Released
ESOC Patch 8.1.0.0 Released
An unrelated hotfix allows for the convenient implementation of some immediate improvements to EP8, almost in time for the second season of the ESOC Premier League. Most notably, preliminary feedback indi(a)cates that certain changes warrant positive tweaking, in order to be properly tested. Otherwise, I currently remain comfortable with the release, and as we enjoy another exciting event, I will continue to observe reception and results for future updates, with keen interest.
Thank you for your continued input, and thanks to gamevideo331 for additional assistance with testing. Happy easter to you all!

EP 8.1.0.0
changelog since EP 8.0.0.0
ESOC Patch General
- Removed special decorations from main menu.
- Main menu art stylized for EP and resolution upscaled.
ESOC Patch bug fixes
- "20 INFINITE Bison" card now replaces the "12 Bison" card as originally intended, instead of the "9 Bison" card.
- "Japanese Isolation" attack bonus now affects Light Infantry units.
ESOC Map Pack installer
- Fixed an issue where the "compatible" versions of certain ESOC maps weren't functional since EP8.
ESOC Patch Launcher
- Fixed an issue preventing the EP custom maps folder from being shared with TAD/RE official custom maps folder. The fix is not retroactive and affects only new EP installations; if you would like to have your custom maps become shared, manually delete folder "RMF" under "Documents\My Games\Age of Empires 3" and re-install EP using the latest installer (8.1 or higher).
ESOC Patch balance changes
Comments by @zoom, in italic.
General
– "British Allies" hitpoints bonus increased to +5.5% (from 5%)
Thank you to Somppucuckoo for suggesting this buff exclusively to the Sepoy.
– "Blunderbuss" improvement cost reduced to 75f (from 110f)
– "Eastern Medicine" and "Spirit Medicine" improvements cost reduced to 120f (from 150f)
Thank you to Mitoe for suggesting buffing these Market improvements, to boost their viability without significant adverse effects on balance between civilizations.
Treasures
– 110 wood (Spruce guarded by 2 White Tigers) decreased to 95w
This change is adjusting an overpowered treasure.
Aztecs
– Arrow Knight ranged attack range decreased to 28 (from 30)
Please note that this nerf, which makes the unit more reasonable to counter at range, does not affect line of sight or siege attack (which is used versus buildings and ships). Thank you to Mitoe for highlighting this issue to me.
Indians
– "Dravidian Martial Arts" shipment effect increased to +15% all unit hand attacks damage and +15% Rajput hand attack damage (from +15% all unit hand attacks damage); description updated to "All hand attacks do more damage, but especially Rajputs’, +1 Villager."
Based on results, further improving the viability of the Rajput seems warranted, and this is a minimally risky and thematic way of achieving that, while testing the more general buffs to the civilization.
– Sowar heavy infantry multiplier decreased to 0.5 (from 0.57); infantry multiplier increased from 1.75 to 2; "Desert Terror" shipment heavy infantry multiplier effects adjusted accordingly to -0.1 (from -0.125); Mansabdar adjusted accordingly
– Mahout Lancer "infantry" multiplier increased to 1.75 (from 1.5); Mansabdar adjusted accordingly
The positive tweaking of these EP8 changes will ensure that they have the intended effect, helping the viability of the civilization in general, and the units and their related play-styles in particular, with minimal adverse effects on team balance. Please note that the Mahout Lancer remains ineffective against heavy infantry, on its own.
– Siege Elephant cost reduced to 300w, 350c (from 300w, 400c); line of sight increased to 36 (from 29); Mansabdar updated accordingly
– "2 Siege Elephants +1 Villager" shipment cost reduced to 350f (from 500f)
– "3 Siege Elephants +1 Villager" shipment cost reduced to 350f (from 600f)
Thank you to Mitoe for suggesting the inclusion of these changes, which address the punitively high cost of the Siege Elephant, as well as its punitively low line of sight.
Japanese
– "Japanese Isolation" attack bonus increased to +5.5% (from 5%)
Unlike the one to British Allies, this tiny change is being made solely to avoid an unacceptable bug that causes the vast majority of numerical values (including 5% but not 5.5%) to be applied incorrectly and uncontrollably. Until we are able to adopt a better solution, any adverse balance effects should be perfectly tolerable—better the single-decimal value you know, than the infinite-decimal value you don't.

Why not ? These are high quality patches, it's not like the changes were random and Zoi totally ignored the community.Lecastete wrote:So you're gonna release one patch per week or something
Re: ESOC Patch 8.1.0.0 Released
In fact there's already another patch planned for next week. Going to be minor, though; certainly no more changes to civ balance.
Re: ESOC Patch 8.1.0.0 Released
well this will break sepoys again.....
Re: ESOC Patch 8.1.0.0 Released
well, what's the difference between 5% and 5.5%? just to deliver us "we''re working on balance"?
Re: ESOC Patch 8.1.0.0 Released
I think you are facing a language barrier here. Read this part again:fei123456 wrote:well, what's the difference between 5% and 5.5%? just to deliver us "we''re working on balance"?
It's not about buffing the 5% to 5.5% for fun, but to avoid bugs that came with it being 5%. The 0.5% higher stats shouldn't affect balance at all, but at least it helps this theorem:this tiny change is being made solely to avoid an unacceptable bug that causes the vast majority of numerical values (including 5% but not 5.5%) to be applied incorrectly and uncontrollably
Better the single-decimal value you know, than the infinite-decimal value you don't.
Re: ESOC Patch 8.1.0.0 Released
there was a bug with hp due to infinite decimals
Correlation doesn't mean causation.

Re: ESOC Patch 8.1.0.0 Released
It's a hotfix.
Good changes, thank you for implementing them.
edit: except for rajput buff. I'm sure they're OP if anyone bothered trying to make them

Re: ESOC Patch 8.1.0.0 Released
Yeah, 5% causes unit stats to increase/decrease incorrectly due to a calculation error. When you allied & un-allied, you would actually end up with less attack than what you initially started with.
5.5% works correctly.
5.5% works correctly.

Reason: turns out 5.5 doesn't work well either

Fine line to something great is a strange change.

I think I'm pretty close to moving past the point of anger, and moving into the phase of hysterical laughter. It's so ridiculous it's becoming funny.

What is wrong with you people @Hazza54321 @Diarouga. Pretty sure everyone was crying that mahouts got nerfed and sowars were too weak. Then they get buffed and then everyone starts crying AGAIN.

The revert is good but more random changes were added.charlemango wrote:What is wrong with you people @Hazza54321 @Diarouga. Pretty sure everyone was crying that mahouts got nerfed and sowars were too weak. Then they get buffed and then everyone starts crying AGAIN.
That's the big issue honestly. One bad change is reverted, but 10 are added, and all this in one week without anyone being asked.
Re: ESOC Patch 8.1.0.0 Released
Can someone explain the reasoning behind there being an infinite 20 bison card?

Re: ESOC Patch 8.1.0.0 Released
Sowars were pretty significantly buffed vs their counter. Instead of doing 1.5x to skirm-type units, they now do 2.0x. To put that into perspective, it means a Sowar now kills a Colonial-age Dutch skirm in 3 swings instead of 4 swings. It means it always kills a Strelet in 2 swings instead of 3 swings. Pretty huge.IAmSoldieR wrote:So sowar and mahouts are back to re status?
Mahouts used to do 2.0x vs skirm / 1.0x vs musk, now they do 1.75x vs skirms and musks. People are complaining because it's strictly a nerf vs skirm/goon/huss type compositions, but Mahouts are now significantly buffed vs musk/huss/skirm type compositions.
