WARNING: possible loss of personal files when playing DE

  • Quote

Post by EAGLEMUT »

Image Player reports indicate that there is currently a critical bug present on Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, causing a possible loss of personal data on the player's computer.

We would like to advise fellow members of the community to either not launch AoE3:DE for the time being, or ensure that you have proper backups of your data.

Microsoft has so far not taken a stance on the issue, so it is unclear when the issue will be resolved. Stay tuned for more information, and stay safe!

Update 1: Microsoft has shared that they are currently working on this issue as a top priority.

Update 2: Hotfix patch 5025 has been released, but there has been no confirmation if it has addressed this issue.

Update 3: Continued reports of data loss indicate that the issue has still not been resolved!

Update 4: Official stance from Microsoft:

As for ESOC events, we had a preliminary idea for this weekend planned but, as a result of this bug, all our events are suspended until further notice.

Thank you for the warning.

Is it possible to pin this on all forums, or at least all DE forums, for people who don't look at the front page or news forum?

@Victor_swe think of it as a timed demo version with "happy ending".

A new build was pushed to the password-protected "microsoft_build_final" branch on Steam this morning. I'm not sure if they only push builds there right before public releases, or if they use steam to share builds internally.

At the very least, it means they're actively working on updates, but that's probably obvious. Optimistically, it might mean a new update in the next day or so.

Seems unlikely, right? I'd guess if it reaches steam it's probably close to release

Not sure, if you look at SteamDB there are a lot of different branches that are clearly for internal sharing (e.g., "marketing" was probably an early build for the marketing team to use to create promotional art). So the question is what exactly the "microsoft_build_final" branch is used for, and how aptly it's named.

Was this published?
I was thinking maybe us, esoc members could organize a mass tweet action to get a response from the devs... if this has been published then it won't be necessary.
These guys should really invest in a Social Media team, fucking hell...

Game development quality seems to have gone down

Image

If this happened to me, I would check the TOS to see if the company discharged any responsibility for data loss and if this is legally actionable.
If not, I think I'd make sure they get a lot of press for it. Data loss is no joke. Somebody will have to pay for it, if some of those data were valuable and cannot be fully recovered.

You really can't trust anyone anymore, not even Microsoft. I back up all my stuff at least once per week, I don't rely on the recovery system because even that one could malfunction or restore to an older restore point.
External backups on physical disks are still the best.
