Best time to try the game out! Be sure to tell your friends.
Additionally, the -70% sale of base game is also extended until end of the weekend.

Yes and let's not forget that aoe 3 is still being played on voobly and game ranger. Also the ones still on Eso. There are more aoe 3 players than aoe 4.

I'm not sure about that. Unless you are really happy with lots of single-player users, which doesn't really help a multiplayer-focused community like ESOC that much.

AoE3 has ~4k players on the 1v1 leaderboard (players have played in the last 28 days).
AoE4 has ~18k on the quick match 1v1 (played in the last 28 days), and 45k on the season 1 leaderboard (presumably any time in the last 2.5 months)

If you want to compare tgs its even worse. The lowest quick match tg leaderboard (4v4) has 25k, while AoE3 has ~4k again.

The game’s first campaign mission should be a hyperlink to ESOC Off Topic. That’ll get every aoe3 single player gamer to stick around until we can convert them to multiplayer.
If I were a petal
And plucked, or moth, plucked
From flowers or pollen froth
To wither on a young child’s
Display. Fetch
Me a ribbon, they, all dead
Things scream.

It is no secret that the majority of AoE3 players remain in singleplayer. I am kinda surprised though that the ratio may look so different for AoE4 in comparison.

Yes, the campaigns of aoe 3 are better than the ones of aoe 4. Well, the multiplayer of aoe 3 isn't as inviting as it should be.

Well this is exciting isn't it. Most players on at one time since USA release. You could say that AoE3 DE's numbers are getting pretty scary.

If one were to revitalize AOE3, I would say you need a third party, custom ladder. Sort of Voobly style.

- player lobbies,
- players agree to map and match up,
- ban and unban civs from the ladder depending on current balance,
- do the same for 2v2 and 3v3, probably

I just hope DE is not going to implement all of the EP changes. Right now it is a big clusterfuck.

- do the same for 2v2 and 3v3 probably, remove the probably I noticed that with only the legacy civs the team balance is decent, there are only some civilizations a little stronger than others.

This to me sounds like going backwards. I prefer the way it works now, by far. There is no need to ban any civ, DE balance is good.

AoE2 with a significantly larger playerbase, had more than 10x the number of players on HD (an inferior product in every way) compared to voobly.

I don't see how going back to that sort of situation is going to help gain new players.

DE is coming along quite nicely. Better late than never. After tomorrow's patch I'm sure AoE4 will be back to decent numbers and then all will be looking better than ever.

To be fair I have no idea where balance is at the moment with AOE3. So I guess my take on it is wrong.

Yeah I wouldn't do Voobly but I would do an alternate ladder / event. I'm not sure how well oiled the ESOC tourney machine is these days, but I could imagine a simple league where players upload replays (custom games or QS games) and then ranking is given or retracted to a player. This would be on ESOC. Run an event for a few weeks or something, replays may be uploaded 24/7. Winner gets a small cash prize or just a forum badge.

The reason that I even bring up this at all is because a ton of competitive AOE3 players really enjoyed lobby 3v3 randoms back in the ESO days. So people Tibia, Veni, Hazza, Samwise, etc. would all play in these games. DE, no matter which way you slice it, killed that off. I don't care for team games myself and honestly dislike them so hard in AOE3, but I know it was an enjoyed format by a good chunk of the competitive community. People also enjoyed lobby 1v1s; it was nice that you could ask someone to just switch out of playing Otto so you could have a more fun game.

Blind map / QS ranked games are fine but they have limitations once the game is of the size of AOE3.

People enjoy leaderboards, people used to look at the sidebar on ESOC for current elo rankings. It might even be interested to see a leaderboard with a different format than official and see if there's any major differences in player rankings.

I'm just spitballing and entirely unsure whether it would be smart to give resources to a project such as this one, but it's not an unpleasant thought exercise.

A day in the limelight

The amount and variety of content introduced in the DLC and the continuous changes and reworks is enough to make the game feel fresh again, with plenty room for experimentation outside of the proven and tested strategies.

Communities are welcoming the influx of new players by producing tutorials and guides to teach them the ropes of the game, while veterans gather together to brainstorm new tricks.

Within the AOE3 community, two of the most long-standing communities of Age of Empires III, the Royal Clan and ESOC have partnered up with United Empires to host the Kings of the Old World, sponsored by Microsoft. This comes after the bitter news of the game being left out of the Wololo competition, the biggest competitive Age of Empires event.

With a prizepool of U$D 6000, the biggest prize pool in the game history, the Kings of the Old World tournament will focus on the European maps, where veterans of the game will put the game to the test.

The tournament qualifiers start this weekend, you can check the rules and the schedule at viewtopic.php?f=1093&t=24493

The game it’s also free on Steam during the weekend and is also available for purchase for 70% off.
They summed up the current situation pretty well, mentioning the F2P weekend, the 6000$ tournament co-hosted by M$ and how the community was disappointed that Red Bull Wololo disregarded aoe3.
