Explained: Sign ups, Map rules, Civilization rules

Post by princeofcarthage »

Sign Ups Explained

- Once Sign ups close at 18:30 GMT on 4th, May 2018, each team will be assigned a captain.
- The other player's sign up will be canceled. Name will be renamed to as Team PlayerName.

Why is this done?

- Traditionally ESOC hosts 1v1 tournaments. The only 2v2 was an invitational. As such signup process and brackets where made keeping "1v1" as format in mind.
- This somewhat limits our ability to host 2v2 tournaments.
- However, we needed to be sure that both the players want to sign up and are aware that they are teamed with other person, in order to avoid "fake teams" being posted.
- So we came up with this workaround, where each team would be represented as one player.
- Concluding that you need not worry even if your sign up gets canceled.

For Ex.
Player 1 : Picoro1
Player 2 : Sav0ryBeef

Captain = Picoro1
Name = Team Picoro1

Sav0ryBeef's sign up gets canceled.

Brackets = Team Picoro1 which represents both picoro1 and sav0rybeef.
Note : Only the captain would be able to post recordings of played games.

Concluding that you need not worry even if your sign up gets canceled.

Map Rules Explained

- Team with higher average elo will select a map from the map pool in game 1 after which winning team will select the map in following round(s).

What does this mean?

- Consider this map pool for example : (BO 3) Pampas Sierras, Kamchatka, Indonesia, Klondike, Bengal
- Consider Team 1 with average ELO : 1750
- Consider Team 2 with average ELO : 1721
- Team with higher ELO that is Team 1 in this case will veto one map.
- Team with lower ELO that is Team 2 in this case will veto one map.
- Game will be played on the last remaining map.
- After game 1 losing team will pick any remaining map from the map pool.
- This continues until the end of the series, and not in alternate format.

Civilization Rules Explained

Consider Team 1: Average ELO : 1750
Player 1 : A
Player 2 : B

Consider Team 2: Average ELO : 1721
Player 1 : C
Player 2 : D

During the course of a series, a team may not use a civilization twice.

- For Ex. in Game 1 Team 1 : Player A uses British and Player B uses French, then for the remainder of the series none of the player from Team 1 can use British or French again.
- This means that each Team must use 6 unique civilizations in BO3 if series reaches Game 3.
- This means that each Team must use 10 unique civilizations in BO3 if series reaches Game 5.

Team with higher average ELO in game 1 will lock in the civilizations right after picking the map.

- In this case Team 1 with higher ELO in Game 1 shall lock civilizations first ( both the players ) after which Team 2 will lock the civilizations. That is Team 2 gets to counter pick.

From Game 2 players will pick civilizations in alternating pattern starting with a player from winning team.

- Consider Team 1 won Game 1.
- Player A/B from Team 1 picks his civilization.
- Player C/D from Team 2 picks his civilization.
- Player A/B ( whoever didn't pick earlier ) from Team 1 picks his civilization.
- Player C/D ( whoever didn't pick earlier ) from Team 2 picks his civilization.

Why not the team with the lower Elo select a map? It's all ready not fair that there is no max Elo for the teams. So lower Elo teams have it even harder bc they don't have any advantage.

Because like we see who team with each other and imo it would be more interesting to have a pr 40 with a pr 30

Disagree. TR did this because top 3 players were far and away better than anyone else. Sup doesn't have this problem and if max Elo was enacted you'd just be compromising the tournament's competitive integrity in the later rounds.

Do agree map picking seems strange and exploitative. I would like to see a set pool and order standardized.

Yeah I wasn't quite sure about the Elo thing... Maybe it's just bc it would be in my team's favor :hmm:

I think really the lower Elo team should pick the map

lower ELO team in earlier rounds where elo difference is considerable gets to double counterpick though which is a much more advantage imo

The players are going to have to actually learn the tournament rules -- rip.

All of it makes sense except for map picking. Not sure why Top elo picks the first map then the winner gets to pick the next map. Seems to severely disadvantage being the lower elo team. Like High Elo team picks map --> picks civs and executes planned strategy on their chosen map --> lower elo team probably loses due to lower elo + other team using their own strategy --> winning team picks map and repeats. Seems to go against logic especially as counter picking civs is less of a thing in 2v2.

IMO first map of series should be fixed then the winning team can pick next.
