It shows that people pick what they're comfortable with. For instance I'm going germany, even if it's not a good civ on no tp and/or water maps, just because it's an obvious pick for me. I'm sure lots of other people did that

Japan's only terrible mu is vs. brit (which it seems very few people are playing) and in every other one I think they've got a decent shot if you're willing to play creatively, so I'd go Japan. India does well in every mu and you don't have to play creatively so I guess that's why it'd be the most popular. Honestly I'd also go Sioux, unless this is being played on the 6.0 beta.

Regardless, Aztec seems like a decently positioned pick. Although I must say I feel like expertly played Dutch/India can beat Aztec still and of course the match up vs Brits isn't great. I don't think the match ups vs Germany and France are great and while I don't think those civs are good picks I think they are relatively popular civs amongst players that will get picked regardless.

Maybe you shouldn't overanalyze and just pick India.

Aztecs are just hard to play. Yes, they're a very good civ but you can fuck up easily.

Ahah I knew that. Honestly I would have picked Iro or Fre for this.
In the end if you throw only one event like this people will play what they are comfortable with as Kaiser said. Basically whatever is more practical.
In theory best picks should be India Jap and Aztecs but the problem is you need at least 3-4 strats and about 8-10 different builds with each civ to cover all MUs. I dont think there is a single player that remotely thinks of doing that even in normal ladder games, so definetely not in a tourney.
If thos was thestandard format for esoc events there would be more refined strats and higher level of play.
