[Resolved] Failed to join - I tried everything
Hello everybody,
I would love to play AoE3 online. I tried everything but i just can't. If anybody find the solution, i would give him like 1 million dollars !
I play the last version of the game, fully patched : 1.14
So i installed the game and try to join a game on GameRanger. I can see the game, but when i connect, i got the "Failed to join" message.
This is what i tried to do :
- open 16000 port
- restart router
- disable the firewall
- disable AVG Antivirus
- enable DMZ on the router
- reinstall the game plus deleting the Program Files and My Games folder
But i STILL have this error message.
Can anybody help me please ?
Thanks a lot.

Re: Failed to join - I tried everything
Hello,
latest official version of the game is The Asian Dynasties 1.03, sounds like you're actually on the old vanilla version without expansion content and fixes.
Nevertheless, steps for fixing "Failed to join" are the same:
- the ports you need forwarded are 2300-2310 port range TCP/UDP + port 80 TCP, no idea where you got 16000 from
- if you are unable to set up port forwarding properly for some reason, you can alternatively use the free https://windscribe.com/ VPN and turn it on before launching game
Furthermore, the official ESO servers are still up and running ever since the game's release, you do not need to play on the inferior Gameranger platform with less people. If you have the game pirated or forgot your ESO account credentials, note that there will be Steam sales happening fairly soon when the game will go for 75% off or so.

Re: Failed to join - I tried everything
Some extra ideas:
1. Try to restart game without using browser or other programs. (this works for me with my current network)
2. Use windscribe. It will make your games laggy but you will be able to join every game. Give your email so you get 10Gb a month, it's worth it.
3. Use Voobly instead of GR. There are so few players there but you can arrange games with someone on ESO o ESOC forum.
3. Change your internet provider and try again. It's a radical measure but it's better than paying 1M Dollars.

But dude, we could use this money
Re: Failed to join - I tried everything
Yea the isp itself its almost certainly not the issue.
Re: Failed to join - I tried everything
Double check so the port forward was done correctly, there's a port checker in the free trial of these programs: https://portforward.com/store/pfconfig.cgi
Note that for Gameranger you want to forward 16000 UDP and not TCP.
If the port checker says it's forwarded you should be good to go, but some routers still won't let you connect. This happened for me with my previous router, but replacing it and port forwarding the new one solved the issue.
That's if you play through ESO, for Gameranger it's 16000 UDP according to https://portforward.com/ports.htm

Re: Failed to join - I tried everything
As already mentioned, Windscribe will do the job. I use it and usually play without lag - even in 3v3 on Deccan.

You should expect it earlier, sometime this month: https://www.whenisthenextsteamsale.com/

Re: Failed to join - I tried everything
As everybody said, use a VPN. It will save you countless hours of troubleshooting.

The only thing that worked for me was to change my ISP (internet company)

Re: Failed to join - I tried everything
I installed Windscribe and yes, it worked. I can join lobbies and play with others.
BUT it's extremely laggy and everybody is lagging. Is there a solution for that ? A non-laggy VPN ?

Re: Failed to join - I tried everything
You can try selecting a different location in Windscribe, preferably something close to where you are.
Re: Failed to join - I tried everything
I chose a very close location, and everybody's lagging because of me...
Re: Failed to join - I tried everything
Strange, I have just played 4-5 games without any lag.
Windscribe suggest a location, do you use that?

Re: Failed to join - I tried everything
Try to connect without Windscribe turned on.

Re: Failed to join - I tried everything
That didn't work. No Windscribe, no joining game.
But why Windscribe allow me to play ? Is that the changing of IP ? I just tried with Hide All IP and it didn't work.
What's the difference with Windscribe ?

Re: Failed to join - I tried everything
With Windscribe you don't connect to other players directly, but through Windscribe's servers, therefore circumventing essentially any kind of router settings on your end that would block the connection. It also means data between you and the players have to travel through Windscribe first, in turn increasing latency. At least that's my interpretation.
Re: Failed to join - I tried everything
I found the fix !!!
I use Voobly instead of GameRanger and it's working :)
