Breezey beautiful is finishing up his intensive esthetician course and accordingly doesn’t have time to compete in aoe3 for the next few weeks. Would’ve really liked to have seen him play this week too!n0el wrote:Not Optimus vs breeze and forjustice vs jeri?

Re: ESOC Premier League - Playoffs
Ez win for NN
Re: ESOC Premier League - Playoffs
Can I ask the reason for NN picking 1st in the game 2's? Shouldn't they have the advantage of picking 2nd as they finished the EPL top on the table? I get that all games get played out, but when it could come down to the last match surely you want to be able to get your wins on the board asap to get some momentum?

Re: ESOC Premier League - Playoffs
Great point. There should be some advantage to finishing first. In double elim tournaments you often see the finalist who got there through the winner's bracket get a full extra point on the board, even.

Re: ESOC Premier League - Playoffs
It may be a disadvantage but only in slight. Speaking of, the league stages had some inequality - two teams locked first in only one week, but the other teams had to lock first in two weeks. The two “disadvantaged” teams? NN and MDS. And strangely enough, the week with the biggest landslide victory was the one between NN and MDS, where NN locked civs first in game 2, ie. they were supposedly at a disadvantage. So it’s really neither here nor there.
Re: ESOC Premier League - Playoffs
First place should give an advantage though.

Re: ESOC Premier League - Playoffs
That wouldn’t make for good entertainment.
Re: ESOC Premier League - Playoffs
Giving NN +1 point, which also acts as a perfect tie breaker, wouldn't diminish entertainment value at all.
Re: ESOC Premier League - Playoffs
I don’t really understand how +1 point is a tiebreaker?
Re: ESOC Premier League - Playoffs
Yeah nevermind, you don't need a tie breaker because you're playing an odd number of games
Re: ESOC Premier League - Playoffs
Well for the sake of understanding your point, what was your visualization of the format where the +1 point would be beneficial to the tournament?Goodspeed wrote:Yeah nevermind, you don't need a tie breaker because you're playing an odd number of games
Re: ESOC Premier League - Playoffs
"Play all" series with an even number of games per series. For example in chess round robin formats you play each opponent twice, once with black once with white.
Would've made sense here with the civ picking rules, since you'd never have to agree on a MU, but that's another discussion

Goodspeed has never been so close to bring a point to his team

I was hired for lobbying, no one in their right mind would expect decent games out of me
Re: ESOC Premier League - Playoffs
I mean it makes sense. You want to incentivise coming in first place to prevent people throwing matches.

That would save some trouble in the Wickedcossack series.Goodspeed wrote:Would've made sense here with the civ picking rules, since you'd never have to agree on a MU, but that's another discussion
Re: ESOC Premier League - Playoffs
Curious, what games/where exactly does this occur where there is a winner's advantage granted? I tried searching Go/Shogi tournament formats and couldn't find anything about players starting a series with a win on the board.Goodspeed wrote:Great point. Re: ESOC Premier League - Playoffs
Many tournaments have this. In RLCS Season 2, Flipsid3 Tactics had to win two BO7s in a row to win the tournament because they entered the finals via the loser's bracket route. MIE would have won the tournament if they had won the first or the second BO7. This may be a little extreme and too exhaustive for aoe3 (since a RL match takes 5-7 minutes), but it wouldn't have been a bad idea to start the #1 seed 1-0 up or to grant some sort of other advantage. These are things we can look into for a possible next EPL.Cometk wrote:Curious, what games/where exactly does this occur where there is a winner's advantage granted? Re: ESOC Premier League - Playoffs
The round process or losers bracket is way longer than winner bracket, which suggest winner bracket champion have a slight advantage on saving strength and prepare for the final match and the losers bracket have to continually playing to the end.

Re: ESOC Premier League - Playoffs
Probably getting 2nd finishers to pick civs first in G2 could be a good way of doing it.
However for this finals losing our 2nd most expensive player is already advantage enough for NN.
