New PC, game crashing
New PC, game crashing
I got a new PC several weeks back and recently decided to play a game of aoe, and it crashed around 30 seconds into the game. I tried 2 more games and each time it crashed 30 seconds to a minute into the game. No issues with any other game, wondering if anyone else has had similar issues. New hardware is a ryzen 9800x3d and 4080 super.

Re: New PC, game crashing
My game crashes, but only in late game when entering a big fight.
i5-9600K, GTX 1660 Ti, 32GB RAM.
For a new PC, make sure GPU drivers are up to date?

Gpu and cpu drivers are up to date. I’m coming from a 10900k and 1080ti which almost never had issues. Could be Nividia that’s to blame, I’m choosing to baselessly blame amd since this is my first amd processor.

Re: New PC, game crashing
Most likely it is AMD, I have a 7700x, and games have crashed way more often even though I used same graphics card from old pc (nvidia). I upgraded to a 4080 and it still crashes. Too lazy to swap the platform as it took me several hours to get the wires to fit the case. If you are running windows 11 that could also be a cause, I swapped back to windows 10 and there’s less crashes, but still happens in older games.

Haven't touched intel processors in years and never really bad stability issues on my system. Knock on wood.
I would never buy Nvidia, not going to pay a 50% premium
Unsure what would be causing issues on a fresh install. It would be interesting to ascertain if it's just AOE3 or other things that are causing issues.

Are you on 24H2 for Windows 11? That one's very buggy right now.
That said, maybe try a full reinstall of Windows (wipe the SSD beforehand) but before that you could also make sure to update your UEFI BIOS. I'm also on AMD for the first time in my life since this summer and everything's running great (aoe3 included). Mind you I'm still on Win 10 though until the support ends later this year.

It’s likely a bad windows update, I went back to windows 10 and saw a 10% perf boost and way fewer crashes, and it’s much better for older games as well.

Re: New PC, game crashing
You can get that same kind of performance on Windows 11 as well by turning off HVCI. Thing is, WIndows 11 has higher security standards by default that eat up some performance (less now with the newest 24H2 rollout, if only it didn't have so many issues). If you turn up the same kind of settings in Windows 10 you will see an even higher performance impact.

I actually feel very dumb now. I play on 2560 x 1440, the game was defaulting to like 3060 x 1600 or something and when I changed it to my actual monitor resolution that fixed it.

that's also why I hate it when people tell people to google it. chances are someone asking about the issue and then posting the solution is the solution you're going to find.
