How many players have been playing Aoe3:DE?
How many players have been playing Aoe3:DE?
Hey everyone,
I was wondering if somebody knows a valid number of players who bought AoE3DE/started playing it online? I was curious if the community is starting to grow again. I can't find a hint for numbers.
Greetings

No way to find out online numbers, but the last few days, the numbers of aoe3:DE and aoe2:DE (on Steam) have been pretty much the same, close to 20k at peak times, aoe2:DE being roughly 5% higher.
In the long run, aoe2 will retain a larger portion of their playerbase compared to aoe3:DE, but aoe3:DE is doing quite well so far.

I think that's always the games with new games. If you look at the ESO population, it never reached the high amounts generated the first month's after launch ever again.look wrote:POOR AOE3 DE..edeholland wrote:https://steamdb.info/app/933110/graphs/From

Looking at the Steam reviews, not everyone liked the game, which leads to refunds and people never starting up the game again. This applies not only to AoE3:DE.

Re: How many players have been playing Aoe3:DE?
Yesterday's peak was 10,751.
It hasn't been close to 20k since first 4 days. And serms to have stabilized around 10-11,000 mark now.
Majority of players are singleplayer. And the campaigns are a lot shorter than of Aoe2. Also with multiple bugs in campaigns, and game in general with poor AI. It pushes people away.
Once it gets fixed completely, the users will gradually increase. But there won't be that many people trying again as was on launch day. It is a missed opportunity. Unlike aoe2 which saw a spike in March after fixes. Since it has a larger base more people try it.

Re: How many players have been playing Aoe3:DE?
I have played 1v1 through quick search about 10 times. Let's estimate the number of players that are currently playing 1v1 through quick search.
Assume that the total number of players that are playing 1v1 through quick search is about "X" people.
Assume that after waiting for "A" minutes, there is "(B*100)%" chance that we might find a player to play against.
Assume that the average play time of a 1v1 matchup is about "C" minutes.
Assume that the total number of players who have the same power level as us and can be found via quick search is about X*(D*100)%
Then we have the following equation:
B = 1-(1-A/C)^((X*D-1)*0.5)
I am going to roughly estimate that A≈3, B≈0.7, C≈15, D≈0.1, which gives us:
0.7 = 1-(1-3/15)^((X*0.1-1)*0.5)
We have X≈118, which means there are approximately about 118 people on DE who are actively playing 1v1 matchup through quick search.

I am going to roughly estimate that A≈3, B≈0.7, C≈15, D≈0.1, which gives us:

First of all, aoe2 took a lot longer to get on a stable state, and look how well that game is doing. We don't know when aoe3 will be in a decent state with only little bugs remaining here and there. If aoe2:DE could survive months of bugs then aoe3 definitely can survive the first couple of weeks/months with them.
About online features and multiplayer social channels, aoe2 is even worse than aoe3 in that regard and the game is still thriving.
Secondly, aoe2:DE profits from the COVID all-time gaming high which all online services and games profited from back in March.
That game's all-time high is obscured by that simple fact. I'm sure aoe3:DE would have hit 30k+ on Steam on launch day too if it was released in Spring. Without COVID, aoe2's peak numbers on Steam would have been around ~25k, I suppose.
No surprises here, aoe2 has always been the more popular game, and definitely the most popular Age of Empires game ever.
Re: How many players have been playing Aoe3:DE?
Yeah, my bad. That march spike was due to covid.
We agree here that aoe2 was always more popular. And since there are lot more people with fond memories of original or hd aoe2 than tad. Aoe3 can't recover from a bad start the same way as Aoe2. People follow trends, and are more likely to play a game which is played more.
Not that its a lost cause. I have personally not had much issues with Aoe3 DE. And I believe it's better than how Aoe2 DE was at launch. Also not everyone gets the game as soon as it is released. If important things are fixed in 1st month, it should still be ok.
I hope the developers focus on single player aspect too. With better AI. Revamped editor and better tools and support for modders.

Re: How many players have been playing Aoe3:DE?
Not focusing on AI in a game which has a player base of X% playing single mode is just dumb.
Spain pain train is real
Re: How many players have been playing Aoe3:DE?
Like it is fucking hard to make AI's play like humans in 2020?!?!
