Pikeman line of sight so small

Post by dutchdude117 »

Can someone tell me why pike have such low line of sight (12)? it really makes no sense to me. What makes me think of this is how hard it is to siege shrines safely with pikeman . Usually they end up getting gunned down by ashi.

Do you think Dev should buff line of sight on pikes?

It's so that you would have to pay attention when marching troops in the darkness. If you wanna see incoming ashi counter-raid, scout ahead with 1 pike or explorer.

Obviously Pikis have a low LOS because their massive pikis obstruct their vision. Relatable tbh.

I think you should stop asking for a buff to every dutch unit.

Technically Pikes are not a Dutch only unit 8-)

Why are pikes unique in this? Why don't other units need to scout ahead? You could make that same argument for any units ranged or melee tbh

They are not unique, you need to pay attention to any troops you send into the darkness. It's just that melee units have less LOS. It's still quite impossible to pull back musk without damage because 2 range visibility (LOS over range) isn't enough to react fast enough.

Ranged units have more LOS than melee units, that's just how it works. You need more LOS than range so the unit shoots properly. I see it as a feature for ranged units, one of their advantages is the extra LOS.
Now we could argue that melee units overall could be buffed by having slightly more LOS, but why focus on pikes?

I debated on whether to make this post about all melee units or just pikes, and settled on just pikes for a more precise discussion. But I agree with you.

I think pikes should have a lesser LOS than musk. Does anyone have the stats available, how much LOS do they have for musk pike hussar and skirm?

Cmiiw, but I think all melee and shock nfantry have 12 LOS range, while all melee cavalry have something 14-15. For ranged unit I believe it's their base range +4, so skirmisher with 20 range will have 24 LOS while musketeers have 16 LOS.

things should be changed if they affect the overall balance of gameplay. pikeman LOS does not. therefore it should not be changed

I would say this is more of a quality of life buff than a significant balance change.

That doesn't make sense. The only melee unit to compare it to there costs 2.5 times as much and had 1.25 times the los.
A halberdier would be interesting to compare it to.

It is 12 LOS for halberdiers https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Ha ... pires_III)

I would also say halbs should get 15+ LOS

Are Rajput's, changdaos etc 12 too? It sounds like a melee infantry thing.
