I always wondered if I pronounce it correctly and would like to try!

You know that Spanish sound "j", as in "jefe" or "juan", that Americans can't pronounce? I think we will need this one.

Now let's break the word in two: "waard" and "gelder". The first one should not be too hard. It is pronounced similar to the english word "lard", just with an english "v" in at the beginning. The second part of the word, "gelder", should start with the more difficult sound mentioned above - that's the Dutch "g", I think - and sound like "welder" otherwise.

So all in all, borrowing the Spanish pronunciation of "j", I would try to write it "vardjelder".

Does it get close at all?

I looked it up and found rather subtle differences. You are right, it is not exactly identical. But I think it is as close as you can get. If that's the only part to reject at my attempt, I'm happy.

"waard" is pronounced with a long A. I am not a linguist, but AFAIK this sound doesn't exist in English. The "g" is pronounced like you would say it in 's Gravenhage.
