Introducing the "Play all Civs" challenge

  • Quote

Post by Thrar »

It's (presumably) less than half a year until AoE4 comes out, and after nearly 16 years, I found that I've only played a fraction of the available civ content. I'm putting out this challenge to change that:

From now on, I will play a different civ each week in ranked multiplayer until I've played them all.

Update (30 Aug): I've completed the civs initially planned and have decided to add in those civs I've last played years ago, long before DE. I will also do the African civs once the expected rebalancing has happened.

Update (7 Nov): The challenge is completed! :kinggreen: Thank you everyone for your input and encouragement!

Update (8 Jun): With the release of Mexico a while back and now Italy and Malta I've added those civs to the roster.

Civ list and progress

The first civ in this challenge for me are the British in the current week.

Who else here has never played the majority of civs in multiplayer? If you're interested to take up the challenge, post below with your own civ list and give progress updates as you go along!

I've technically played all civs at least once in multiplayer, but not in a systematic way. I've also played slightly more civs in casual 3v3s, but not in 1v1. Here's my list for 1v1:
Civ List and Progress
I think I'll join you and try to focus on a new civ each week. Who knows, maybe this will help me break out of the 1400 ELO range. Gonna start with the Germans.

Ha, i play every civ. One of the things that probably weakens me as a player. Well that and my love of silly things like useless revolts. Though the reason I don’t use the random feature is that I really don’t want to get Japan. Can play them but god I find them boring,

Nothing will ever make me play japan. My opponents just don't deserve this kind of pain.

Ain’t that the truth. Delete civ pls. Let the undeserving pain end.

Yeah,a combination of port revolt and water boom is impossible to win with some civilizations.
In particular infinite huaraka should be nerfed

Progress Update - British

Week 1 with the British is completed. I ended up playing 20-30 games which I feel was enough to get a basic understanding of common strategies. I think the most important skills I learned were anticipating and preparing for hunts running out, using buildings (manors) for line of sight, and regularly checking the minimap to take advantage of that.
It was also nice to get a first-hand experience of British weaknesses (hunt dependency, above all) for the next time I'm playing against them.

Next up will be Aztecs.

Here I've run into a little snag: The strategy wall has much less Aztec information than British, and what's there is probably outdated by now. Would anyone here know a summary of Aztec DE openings and strategies that I could check out as an introduction?

Aztec is interesting. Its the one civ that never clicked with me. I remember preparing for a tournament game against kingofosmane and trying to learn aztec. Mitoe leant me a smurf account so I could do so in secret. I mostly ended up losing to 1st and 2nd lts and was hopeless against captains/majors in practice. Thats when I gave up on the civ.

aztec has been nerfed into oblivion. weaker military shipments, lower siege on their expensive overpriced pike, no viable way to get fortress safely, cant defend without minutemen, in exchange for E A G L E S C O U T

oh and cant convert guardians, that too

Same here, I think my Aztec was like 5 pr worse than my next worse civ.

its ok because for the 10,000 shitters below 900 ELO, aztecs have an 80% win rate

I’m not that good and never took to playing Aztec that much but I’ve always play Aztecs a little more defensively in the sense of raid/boom. Trying to get to 10wp while raiding with coyotes. If you can get to age 3 safely for ERK, that’s excellent.

Obviously this doesn’t work against some civs (Japan fake unraidable civ cough) but there the more traditional options may work better. I don’t see anyone else use this style of play mostly rushing or containing with the civ. However given the ‘nature’ of the game now being a bit more defensive, maybe some more greedy strats could get some play. Aztec certainly doesn’t lack for defensive options.

ok it's been a week of playing nothing but the germans and i gotta say it was pretty brutal, i basically lost most games. a week doesnt seem like enough time to learn a totally new civ.

on to the next civ, which is gonna be Ports I think. will try to get some wins before they nerf CM

10/10 every game.

1) If it's a water map, send schooners, then some combo of 700w/2 vel/rendering plant/whale oil/CM/advanced dock/warship combat. Consider peru revolting at some point in the game.

2) If it's a TP map, send ATP and gather only the wood in transition to build every TP (build some with vills), then move all vills to food. research stagecoach at 4 mins with the age up wood before building a house, then chop 100w for a rax ASAP. ship 700w and have TPs on food for the first few passes, then ship some combo of units/crates/units/spice trade/crates. Consider peru revolting at some point in the game.

3) If it's not a water or TP map, that's like two maps in the pool, send 7 sheep 3x in a row then 700c then some combination of CM/fort/1kc/1kw/factories. Don't just consider peru revolting, but definitely do it.

I played nearly all civs many times. In the earlier days, I also used them in competitive 1v1 and 2v2 games, but in the last 10 years I did pretty much only casual 3v3 stuff.

There are only two civs among the TAD ones that I rarely played: Chinese and Iro/Haude. I hate playing these two civs and won't do so in the future. With Incas, DE brought a third civ into this small set of shittiness.
Whatever is written above: this is no financial advice.
