At some point one might lose interest in some subject or activity. After you've spent a lot of time doing something, it might become repetitive and boring to you.

Once they changed "colonial age" to "commerce age" that was it, people couldn't believe it, game basically became unplayable at that point.

Most people just leave without a dramatic announcement. The announcements usually feels like its either a call for attention, or a person blaming life troubles on the fact that they have a hobby they enjoy.

That's true in some cases but GS is also right. If you're known enough in the community it almost feels like you "must" tell people you're going to stop playing. If you just disappear people will wonder why. And after all, if you spent lots of hours on the game and forums, why not spend another 10 mins to simply say you're gonna quit.

I like how the game is pronounced dead in 2009 there already, and here we are 12 years later people still regularly declaring this game dead. Some things do indeed never change
