Re: Sweden: Blueberries is still a must?
I tried it in the beta when Caro were op (and before I realized torps and iron works were good).
It doesn't really work because leather cannons are bad aggressively. They die to TC fire, MM, towers.
It's just a worse version of jan/Abus, because jans>Caro, abus>LC and Swede is slower, which means no TP line control.

It's a kind of Russia style build, low eco but you idle/contain. I don't think it's really good, but some variation of it could be tried in some MU...

Re: Sweden: Blueberries is still a must?
I use leather cannons to go to age 3. After you ship them and you have like 15 caros to cover and you're behind your tc, nothing can push cost effectively into that. I've held russia and Aztec pushes with half the milo pop. It's weird playing a civ that feels it can age so effortlessly without dying to a timing.
I see lots of games where ppl push out with leather cannons, lose them to a surround, and are stuck in age 2 with garbo musks.

Didn't really test this, but is this actually true?[Armag] diarouga wrote:I tried it in the beta when Caro were op (and before I realized torps and iron works were good).

On paper, I would say that LCs are at least equal to abus. They are significantly more expensive, but have a higher range + higher multiplier vs inf + area dmg. In late game, they even benefit from that pop cost reduction card, making them cost only 2 pop. Could be the most pop-efficient unit in the game.
Whatever is written above: this is no financial advice.

I think he meant in practical terms.
LC are good and, as they cost more, one LC is obviously worth more than one abus, but there is only a certain amount of play you can generate when a unit is that slow and clunky.
Anyway, talking about blueberries I didn't use it before and even less I think it's a must now.
I think people have a tendency of tunnel visioning on trying to get the most eco build possible when in fact that doesn't necessarily win games. I mean, you can send eco theory or spice trade as French too after 4cdbs but none does that.
I understand ironworks as it both doubles the coin gathering rate (big eco buff) and it provides a strategic advantage (gathering almost no coin at all with vills), but blueberry card really feels marginal, despite the gathering boost being significant. Sure, staying under TC for longer with vills is good but hunts are there to be used. Having vills on wood the whole time is an inefficiency in itself that defeats the purpose of sending another eco card.
Also, Swedes are even more reliant on mercs now so ironworks seems like a no brainer to me.
Even the blackberry argument I think it's marginal. I usually send 15 elks instead of blackberry when I'm out of food. And even after that it's better to switch to mills and send the mines for torps, rather than sending blackberries and switching vills to estates for gold.

LCs are still 400 res each, and have a really obnoxious turning radius

In late game with the right cards (pop reduction+caseshot) they are super strong.

Ye with case shot you can go almost pure LCs as they delete cav too. Still they are very slow.

IKTF of seeing your main squeeze neutered by balance changes
Re: Sweden: Blueberries is still a must?
This is why y'all should have selected the one and only squeeze as your main. Brit has proven reliable and only seldom subject to changes while retaining a powerful position throughout the patches. Objectively the best main squeeze with Japan being the only real contender.
Also nice write up Mitoe, happy birthday!

Or don't have a main squeeze at all and be a complete player so you won't get shafted : >

Playing Brits always feels kind of bland, mostly due to their set of available units which boils down to musk/hus/art.

Been having a bit of trouble vs dragoons, especially in age 2 (no jaegers) and in age 4 (jaegers losing to guard goons), but I think I worked it out
