New PC Not Booting Windows from SSD
Yo, so I got some new PC parts, but I'm still using my old SSD (my only storage device on old and new pc)
New: Corsair 4000d airflow case, msi B550 Tomahawk mobo, AMD Ryzen 5 3600 cpu, 2x 16GB RAM
Old: Corsair cx750m psu, GTX 1080ti gpu, crucial mx100 2.5 ssd (256 gb)
-I was running Windows 10 on my SSD, then my PC stopped turning on.
I turn the new PC on, everything is working well, it auto enters BIOS and after I save changes it doesn't boot to Windows. Summary:
-BIOS is recognizing the SSD in the Sata1 slot I have it in - says it's there n all
-No other drives are plugged in
-I have the boot priority set to UEFI Hard Disk
-I replugged everything, switched sata cables and sata ports
I don't care if my ssd gets wiped, I just want to get to windows.
Can I just get Windows10 on a usb (download from another comp) and boot from that?

Screenshots or video of what you are doing. Most likely you never linked windows to your MS account. Windows used to be linked to hardware. You most likely need to re-install windows.
Fine line to something great is a strange change.

u can make a bootable usb with this - might try repair windows on ssd via this or simply install new windowscallentournies wrote: Can I just get Windows10 on a usb (download from another comp) and boot from that?

Re: New PC Not Booting Windows from SSD
I definitely agree installing fresh windows onto the drive is the first thing to try.
Did you figure out *why* old build wasn't booting? I wonder if maybe your SSD is dead. That looks like a fairly old model (2014). Googling around sounds like it has a write lifetime of 72 TB. That would be writing 33 GB of data to it every day for six years to hit that, so that would probably be heavier usage that I would expect in a gaming desktop scenario. Also possible that it died for reasons other than reaching the max write lifetime though.
SSD tech has come a long way since 2014. If your new MOBO had a NVMe slot (looks like it does), I'd think about picking up a new SSD anyway. Something like the 1 TB crucial drive below has almost 5x the read speed, 4x the write speed, and of course 4x the capacity of your current SSD. Priced at $88 on Amazon for me in the US. Could spend a little more and get even faster as well (I think Samsung EVO are still the fastest on the market but unsure)

Re: New PC Not Booting Windows from SSD
what happens when you're trying to boot? maybe legacy mode on Mobo is required for how the old SSD is formatted?
if it's just a conpatibility issue then you should be able to install a new OS on that SSD from a windows install usb media.

Installing fresh when you have new parts is good anyway. Old hard drive still has all the drivers from the old parts and can cause some issues in a new pc.

Re: New PC Not Booting Windows from SSD
Thanks guys it’s working.
M.2 ssd is in the mail, gets here Jan 6 (nvr frgit). In the meantime backed up and reformatted a different 2.5 SSD my dad was using for his mac, combined with USB win 10 it worked well and booted first try.
I didn’t realize how ez to just install windows onto a flash drive, then I punched in my OG windows key on bios.

Re: New PC Not Booting Windows from SSD
can you plug in your old drive as a secondary to explore it? might be of some use as a caching disk mayhaps

@iNcog
The Intel 670p is on sale for $88 now (and I think actually slightly better specs than the Crucial above) if you were holding out

Re: New PC Not Booting Windows from SSD
@iNcog historically those things have only gotten cheaper and they should keep doing so. so if you don't need it, buy it when the need arises. should get a better deal then

Do you see how a 2tb costs 2.5 times than 1tb, better to buy 2 1tb
