It is still possible to connect to ESO on RE, you just need to edit your hosts file get eso.com to resolve properly, as the DNS entry seems to be gone. I did this by editing my hosts file, which you'll need to run a text editor as administrator to do:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc <--------- go to this folder and edit the "host" file using notepad or something similar, at the bottom simply add "168.61.147.56 eso.com", you will need to edit it using admin privileges to save Then launch the game and it should work
In the series of steps, if you are the admin, but still you can't change it, follow these steps:
1. Right click on host, and go to properties. 2. Under security tab, check for permissions. 3. Edit, select the user account which you are on, and check modify. 4. Click Ok/Apply. 5. Retry to add the line and save.
1) If you make this change will it affect performance if the connection problem is repaired?
It is unclear to me what the problem is. I find the explanation, that the link to ESO servers, is broken when some people can sign on with out making changes or using the patch. There is no good solution for me (although I have dled and installed the patch) since I do not have a clear sense of what the caused the problem. There is a work around but that work around is similar (at my level of understanding) to using a bandaid to stop bleeding when one isn't sure what caused the bleeding.
My approach to these problems is to ask questions and see if the answers are consistent. I asked eaglemut (*) on reddit about the apparent ability for some people to be able to log on with standard while most can not. I would paraphrase his answer as 'it works'. That answer does not deal with the discrepancy. 2) Why is log in failing? 3) Will it likely to be repaired by MSFT? 4) Does the 'savorybeef driver edit' affect prospective repairs by MSFT?
There will be a population problem since most people who use the game will not dl an ESOC patch. I think people were not aware of the patch. It is my view that most people will not get past the intial virus warning when you instal the ESOC patch. There has to be some awareness of the need to get the patch adopted by a broad spectrum of players. I think that the ESOC response has been very good - eaglemut (*) and musket923 reddit entries; interjections youtube video; twitter announcement; and the ESOC forum entrie, e.g. savorybeef. This is a problem for me as I am a 'low' level player. Yesterday I had no problems in making as I am well enough known to be able to find other players. The pop level never went above 270 and the circa 20 games were divided about 50% between patch and non patch.
NB: I have a few questions (4) that are numbered for convenience. Please feel free to answer them.
ED 13:32 UTC (*) The post has been edited to correct the reference to eaglemut in a reddit message. In a previous post I used the wrong name. Sorry.
1) No 2) Afaik, AoE3 looks if eso.com is up when trying to connect. When it's not up, it won't let you connect, even when ESO itself is up. The patch/fix disables the check/makes sure the check always results positively. 3) I think it's likely eso.com will be up soon. Then it's repaired.
4) Can't be 100% sure of what MS will do in advance (if anything), but most likely not.

It was momentarily working for some people throughout the day at random, me included.
What is matter the DNS server entry. Some servers still able to resolve the domain name eso.com. That is why some user still able to connect without do any fix. But probably every entry will expire soon...
I have an issue with screen resolution setting. If it is set to anything less than max the map will not fill my screen. With non patch I had resolution set to about 50% and the map would fill the screen.
I would like to ask you to make a youtube video on this fix. Lots of ppl would like to get it, and most ppl do not log in to esoc I just tryed to find a fix on youtube, and there is none. so please make your advice public to the "masses"

hmm, I was searching youtube for "age of empires connection problems" and I did not come across your video. Hopefully more ppl have better luck in their search for a problem fix. Nice of you though, and Thanx for your effort Ps, maybe your heading is not very good? Most ppl playing on Age of Empires, do not know that its called "RE"

it does not show up under what I would concider a "normal" search: "Age of empires connection problems". But some other player, got it, and have made a video about your fix
Still think your heading could be more spesific to what most players would search for, remembering that most players of this game is not a member of esoc
