ESOC Wiki

Post by pecelot »

What is it? What's the purpose of it? Why not embrace the Fandom wiki?

Legit question. I probably forgot about this thread because I didn't want to respond on mobile.

Having our own wiki allows us to do more things than using the existing wiki:
-We can write about a greater range of topics, not just AoE3. We have documentation about the EP on the wiki, about others mods and later about our tournaments, wall of fame, strategies, maps etc. It's not just a wiki for AoE3 related stuff, but also for ESOC and the community in general. We can also make longer pages with guides and how-to's, this is something that the forum isn't the best for.
-We can integrate it with phpbb (our forum software) so that members on this forum can make edits without making a new account.
-We can potentially automate the creation of pages from the files of the game, so that we can implement a 100% correct wiki of AoE3/AoE3:DE stats by automating the process.
-We can draw more people to our site/community because it's on our domain and has links to our platforms.

I'd argue otherwise — hasn't it always been the forum that hosted the Tournament Wall of Fame, championship brackets, maps coverage etc.? It has, and I don't really see anyone complaining about the platform it's on. Putting strategies on a wiki page seems vastly inferior, as it's not possible to discuss them, upload recs etc. Perhaps it'd be technically possible to allow people to do so, but then again: why, if it's already possible on ESOC?

Off-topic, anyone?

But plenty of that is already covered on the Age of Empires Series Wiki. If you need 100% correctness, you can always ask an editor to double-check. Besides, launching the game doesn't take that much time, lots can be just checked in the game in case.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good initiative, but it really seems counter productive for me to start such a project from scratch when we've already got ESOC and the aforementioned AoE Series Wiki up and running for a couple of years now. Helping the Wiki up by expanding articles and unifying standards has been my goal for quite some time now, but unfortunately I was unable to do that due to the omnipresent time constraints and presumably not enough dev experience (to properly put in all the data), not to mention the willpower. I was going to ask ESOC for help, as it'd be obviously less difficult and more appealing to do it together — maybe now is the time? We've got very talented devs, in the end!

Maybe let's put a link to ESOC on this page (ABOVE the dead AoE community site)
https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Age_of_Empires_III
The only wiki thing that should imho be copied, are the lists of Homecity Shipments.
Add to that a matrix of unit icons with base stats and costs
I don't think it is feasible to develop anything more elaborate
It would look awesome, just like the ESOC map list, an would also have a simple way of telling most unit changes made by EP (green or red text next to the stat)
