bwinner’s ottomans guide
Since I have been one of the most active ottomans player in the past year on ep, I have decided to write a guide about how to play them.
It is only 90% finished but I think that if I wait more I am never gonna post it, so there it is
I put a lot of recorded games to illustrate the builds descriptions, but if you want you can also download all of it in the big recorded games pack in the end (which includes also more games).

The Builds
In this part, I try to descibe as many possibilities as possible (can't be exaustiv though of course).
General informations
Age 1
This part is common for all build orders I will describe, unless I precise it in the build.
-If you are on a map with TP, build a TP. If you have a wood start(400w), build a mosque as well.
-If you are on a non-TP map : Build a mosque and research the 50w upgrade to train settler faster.
Build one house.
Then gather only food, and age up ASAP. Your explorer should just gather treasures after getting the TP. Don't forget to get your house in time, otherwise you will miss settler (especially build it ASAP when you get church+TP cuz you will get your shipment very early).

I use the first one for almost every game.
Jan rush
Jan rush
The goal is to hit a big timing relatively early which will be hard to deal with for opponent. It’s probably the easiest build to master as otto.
The BO:
Age 1- 3v
Age 2-700g/700f/3 huss
As usual if it's a wood start go for mosque+tp+house ,gather food and age asap with 400w politician(The Quartermaster).
While aging gather 300w (for houses later) and 50g (for the first 2 jans). Then switch all to food. & send 2 vills forward, do not straight away build 3 houses with 300w ,you need to build the barracks first. So, once you age collect the 400w, build the 2 raxs and queue jans. Build 3 houses.
Ship 700g and gather them to finish your 1st jan batch. 2Nd shipment is 700f to keep massing.
3rd shipment is 3 huss = go time.
Ofc you can do some damages (like sieging a TP) with the first 10 jans as well, but don’t overcommit with them, you really want to wait for the 3 huss to commit.

Typically, that’s the build you want to do when there is a good stagecoach to control.
The BO:
Age 1- 3v (/silk road)
Age 2-700w/700g/3 huss or 700f/3 huss
Nothing special in age 1. Age up with 400w.
VARIATION 1 (timming vs ff): 3v/700w/700g/3huss
You don’t want to invest that much in the stagecoach in this version, but rather punish a typical 8min age 3 from your opponent.
-Build a 2nd TP in transition.
-Get 1 rax+stagecoach with the 400w.
-Get a foundry or a stable with the 700w+more TP if possible+houses
-Control the stagecoach.
-Mass jan+abus or huss and control
-When you get the 3 huss, push opponent’s base
VARIATION 2 (silk road): 3v/silk road/700w/700g/700f/600g...
WARNING : Only on w start or if you got xp treasure (cuz then you have xp from mosquee).
The goal is to get extra eco from the silk road (+1 settler equivalent per TP) and ship only crate cuz they are OP with silk road.
-Build 1 or 2 extra TP in transition and gather 100 extra wood.
-Get 1 rax+stagecoach+one more TP with the 400w (which are 500 now and you have 100 extra stacked).
-Get a foundry or a stable with the 700w+more TP if possible+houses
-Ship only crates and control the stagecoach.
Your mass will be sick if you get away with this greedy start.
TIP : avoid to ship 600w because that will be a lot of wood with silk road and you won’t be able to spend it befor quite some times, so rather use your TP to get the wood you need and not more.
VARIATION 3: 3v/700w/700g/700f or 600g/other crates ?/3 huss
Basicly the same as version 2 but without silk road. Since you have less eco, you generally want to timming at some point with 3 huss. If you went for jan/abus (which is the most common), switching to a stable and building 5 huss timed with the 3 huss can be pretty efficient.
VARIATION 4 (fake jan rush): 3v/700w/700g/700f or 600g/other crates ?/3 huss
The goal here is to be more aggressive and threat a jan rush to force opponent to stay age 2.
-Gather only food and gold in transition to make jans.
-Build 2 raxs with the 400w and make jans.
-Build houses+TP+stagecoach with the 700w.
-Pressure slowly with the 10 jans.
-Later get another building and produce more units.
Ideally, your opponent stayed age 2 and you are well prepared to fight it with your stagecoach and good late age 2 army.
VARIATION 5 (deny a fb): 3v/700g/(3 huss/) 700w
This is when you want to deny your opponent’s fb. Here you will need to chop some wood in transition : 200 if you go rax+stable and 300 if you go rax+foundry. In any case, you want 5jans+either 5 abus or 5 huss (depending of the MU) on first batch. Note that this is quite all in so, only do it when you think having this units early on is gonna be really usefull.

Tower ff
Tower ff
You can say this is the strongest FF civ,the time they age and the timming you get were u can push easily makes the tower FF so common and works well Vs other civs.
The BO:
Age 1- 3v
Age 2-700g/700w
Age 3-8 Jans or 2 falcs/2 falcs or 8 jans/ (1kw/1kg) or (1kg/4mams)
Age with tower+200 coin politician,you just need to gather food & herd.
Gather 200w for a 2nd TP, then gather 100g and then food.
If you think your opponent is going to rush, place the tower in base, otherwise place it forward.
TIP 1 : you can often use the tower wagon to scout if you are unsure, as most civ up later than you, it won’t be in danger early on.
TIP 2 : bring your explorer near the tower wagon to prevent opponents explorer to start sieging it.
Alright so once you age u place your tower and send 2 vills to gather the age up coin and once the 700g age with 4 hussars.
VARIATION 1 : 4 abus can sometimes be use to defend vs heavy infantry pressure
VARIATION 2 : 400w+a galey can be nice on water map depending if you feel like the galey will be usefull.
After aging up there is different versions :
Vs age 3 :
You often want to go for a stagecoach with the 700w and a rax near the tower (in fb if you did the right thing). No need to gather wood here, just rely on the 700w as the stagecoach will provide you more wood for your houses/vet up later. If you didn’t build it at start, include a moske in the build as well (wait to up your jans, you have time).
If the opponent is going age 3, send 2 falcs first and start pressuring with it+the 4 huss+10 jans you made. You want to follow by 8 jans to assure more protection of the falcs.
Then either 1kg/4mams (or foundry into more falcs instead of mams if you feel like it will be better, in which case jans combat instead of 4 mams is nice) or 1kw and 1TC+1 foundry to play the contain/late game.
TIP : Your falc protection/micro will be crucial, you need to be really carefull because once your falcs are down, you are very expose.
Vs age 2 :
Chop 200w for the rax befor your 700w arrive cuz you will need this wood for houses later anyway. Send 8 jans followed by 2 falcs/1k g/4 mams. You can push already with 2 falcs most of the times, but be carreful, you don’t want to lose them. Once the mams are here, don’t hesitate to commit, you need to do as much damages as possible because you are all in.
TIPS : Another possible follow up after a tower ff is to go age 4 and revo (or just play age 4 sometimes). Therefore there is several ways :
-first option : If it’s in your mind early on : your opponent is going age 3 thinking you are gonna be aggressive : do 3v/700g/1kg/1kw/2 bombards and make no units in age 3. This is gonna be fast and all in but there is very high chances that your opponent realizes it too late and die.
-2nd option : you do a kind of semi FI : start normal tower ff with 8 jans/2falcs stuff and at some point (arround 60pop of units), stop making jans and gather a lot of food. Then use the 1k gold to age up. What I like to do when doing it is to follow by 5 spahis while aging up with 3 spahis and then pop the 8 spahis in the face of opponents army who’s realize you was aging up. This together with the remaining falcs and jans that you backed up and didn’t lose (hopefully) often is enought to rekt an army.
-Cheesy stuff (spahis ff): 3v/700g/700w/8jans/5spahis(/1kw or 1kg or 2 falcs)
Here the trick is to ship spahis instead of the falcs (you will need to cut jans for this and don’t do it if you went for a stagecoach). The point is opponent are often not expecting cav at this point, so they might be underprepared. This doesn’t work vs civs that do goons vs classic tower ff though (fr/dutch/ger…). I personally use it vs china/spain mostly, because their anti cav, if they have any, will be hand combat infantry, which aren’t great vs spahis+jans.

Go age 2 as usual with 400w. Build a 2nd TP (+a church if not done already) with the 400w and 1 or 2 house. Gather what you need and age up to age 3 with the exiled prince (fast).
Send 1 fort to place in base, gather 200g/2k food and use the 1k g to age up 4 with 1000g.
VARIATION 1 (all in): ship 1000w, gather 1000f, ship 2 bombard or 8 huss as soon as you are up and revo. I don’t like to do it because with the fort, you usually can afford to be greedier with factories.
VARIATION 2 (normal): don’t ship anything else in age 3. Gather 1000f/1000w and ship factory/factory/2 bombards or 8 huss and revo.
TIP : Gathering extra 300f/300g to upgrade bombard training time is an option, but you don’t always want it as sometimes you will prefer to make huss (with your fort) rather than bombards with factories.
Another viable build to FI revo is to do it to follow a tower ff (see the tower ff section).
You can also decide to not revo and just play age 4 sometimes.

The BO:
Age 1- 3v

This may not the be best map for otto as they are strong with tp ,however you can still manage to pull off ff in non tp maps ,as usual std otto stuff in age 1 ,here you want to get a church and a house ,and upgrade the fast vill production in church if any extra wood present in the crates ,all vills on food and focus on aging ,age with 400w. Since you don’t have a TP, you need to skip 700w and that’s why you aged with 400w and not the tower. However you will still need to chop more wood than usually.
You might be exposed if the opponent tries to pressure you, hopefully, you can have a rax up very early with the 400w from age up. Once in age 3, it’s not really different from the TP version, exept the mams timming is slower, so you want to go for 8 jans/2falcs/1kw more often.

The BO:
Age 1-Schooners

Age 3-2 falcs
There is several ways of doing it. I will here describe one way that consists in going for a fast fortress with a good water eco running in the back of it. I need to say that it works the same way regardless if you are on a TP map or not. The mosquee will just replace the TP if you are on a no TP map and it will be a bit fast, but nothing big.
-Gather only food in age 1 and do it normally, except you send schooners instead of 3v.
-age up with 400w. In transition, all vils on wood, build 1 dock and start producing fish boats.
-with the 400w, build a 2nd dock. Ship 700w and switch all vils to food. keep producing fish boats on 2 dock until you have used all the wood.
-ship 700g and age up with it. You want to gather the 300g with the fish boats ideally cuz that’s more cost effective. You usually want to age up with 400w+1galey.
At this point you have a lot of options. One example is to build 2 raxs, start producing jans and ship 2 falcs 1st in age 3 to have a decent army.at around 9 minutes. You could also chose to age up fast, send a fort and go age 4 for a revolution for instance (having fishing boats to produce hussards in your fort makes it very strong), or play very defensive with jans/abus/falcs and build more fish boats/TC depending of the map. I won’t describe precisely all of this builds, because I don’t know the optimal way as well as for everything else since they are very specific.

VARIATION 1 (if you want to take a stagecoach and bank on the fact the opponent won’t try to deny) : Here you are really abusing the nr10 meta. This is a bit cheesy but it actually archives decent results, even vs top players. Here is the build :
-You make a mosquee and the 1st settler up no matter what in age 1 for this build.
-age up with 400w.
-Then if the stagecoach has more than 2 TP, you take one in transition, otherwise you just gather 125w for the 2nd church up.
-with the age up wood, do 1 more TP and stagecoach it.
-send 4vils (in fact you can send 1 shipment befor 700g because you stagecoach so you wouldn’t have the ress to age up straight)
-send 700g and macro accordingly to go age 3 with the exiled prince (fast age up)
-put all vils on wood
-start building TCs and do the mosquee upgrades as soon as you hit age 3.
ship 1k w and 1k g for the TCs, foundries and rax. You usually want to make abus+jans.
VARIATION2 (no stagecoach or no TP mostly): 3s/700g/(700w if TP map)/1kw/1kg
You kindda do the same as for a normal ff build, until you click up and then do the same as variation1 of this build.
TIPS: -if you are going for this build, this might be good to use a greedier deck than usual, with advanced arsenal and all abus up in age 2.
-You can go less greedy and adapt to what opponent is doing of course.

Nativ rush
Nativ rush
The BO:
Age 1-3v
Age 2-700w,700g or 3 huss
….you need to get nat tp in age 1 then during transition get another one of different tribe and have a church too to get some xp.This is a strat you only want to do on maps with incas or nootkas (like pampas/cascade range/alaska). And this is quite cheesy.
The goal is to just kill opponent before he can do anything in age 2 because you push very early with high siege units.
-Normal age 1, except you really try hard for going up asap, so eat any animals you find or this kind of stuff.
-Age up with 400w.
-Build a nat TP in transition (the closest to opponent’s base). You want to time it with your age up ideally, so that the opponent doesn’t know about it.
-During transition, once you get 200w for the nat TP and like 20 more to train your 1st nat as soon as you hit age 2, switch all villagers to food, cuz you are gonna use the age up wood for the other natives.
Then it’s just about spamming natives in opponent’s base and trying to do damages with them (deny any rax, try to kill vils/houses…).
1st age 2 shipment is either 700w to build a military building and other stuff or 3 huss to keep the pressure up (in this case 700w comes next usually). Then you usually add abus and jans with 700g. Sometimes you can also go up while you bough time with the nats.

How to play each MU
I try in this section to give you some ideas about how to play each MU and tell you some builds that work. Most of the time though you don't want to exactly stick to one plan otherwise you will be too predictable.
I assume here a standard TP map.
Russia
Russia
Tower ff with tower in base. If russia plays age 2, just do normal tower ff stuff, pushing carefully with falcs and mams. If he goes for age 3, just go straight age 4 (see the end of the tower ff description) and revo.
This should be the easiest MU for ottomans.
Brit
Brit
If you have a big stagecoach (like high plains or arizona), you can try to do an age 2 timing and contain.
Otherwise Tower ff is the main build to go. You can adapt it into an age 4 if brit plays age 3.
FI revo can be an option, but honestly I don’t think anything should work. Jan rush can also be a little bit tricky to hold for brit.
France
France
This is a close MU.
Tower ff with 3v/700g/700w/2 falcs/8 jans/1k wood is the most common plan. The mams version can also work though.
Portugal
Portugal
Greedy ff or tower ff both have a chance. I like greedy ff a lot because your units are much better than his in late game (abus eat cassadors). Note that jan rush or jan/abus in age 2 are not an option at all here since the TCs destroy this stuff.
Spain
Spain
The first thing you need to do is scouting the deck : if there is no CM, you can try to go for el famoso 2xjans (see rapha vs H2O seasonal tourney final). Note that he should still be able to survive it cutting a bit of eco in age 2 and timming 5 dogs/7rods/mm/4huss. But in practise they will often fail this.
However if he has CM, jan rush is not an option anymore. In this case, you need to go age 3 or even age 4. Normal ff shouldn’t really work unless if you win the falcs battle (I mean by that that you will lose if you draw the falcs battle and you shouldn’t win it since he will be the defender).
I think greedy ff or FI revo are the builds to go for. Spahis ff cheese can be an option as well.
German
German
This MU is quite heavily german favoured.
Jans/huss into jans/huss/abus pressure and contain in age 2. You can also try a cheesy 2xjans, but realistically this shouldn’t ever work.
Ottomans
Ottomans
The classic stuff is to go for a 400w ff because it beats both jan/abus and tower ff. It loses to 2xjans, but if you scout the 2 raxs early enough, you can adapt it into a jan/abus build and still win.
Dutch
Dutch
Either go for tower ff or jan/huss.
Iroquois
Iroquois
Either go for 700w/700g/3huss timing or for a tower ff or for an FI revo. The 1st plan is the most effective one, although it can struggle vs semi ff :
If the iroquoi guy tries to play age 2, you shouldn’t have problems, because your late age 2 army is much better than his. So the goal is to prevent him from going age 3.

jan/abus contain abusing the effectiveness of jan/abus in a similar way as vs iroquois is good. Aztec are more efficient than iro in age 2, but they don’t have the thread of sliding in an age 3, so all in all it’s an ok MU (assuming you can get a decent stagecoach).

This MU is a bit dumb Imo, because I think otto should win with jan/abus controlling a stagecoach, but the chances to lose explorer being very high makes it a bit of a gamble.
Standard ff aren’t great vs sioux because their mobility is annoying and they have rifle rider to kill both jans and falcs.
Japan

Tower ff is quite hard to defend as japan, so you want to go for this most of the time. When there is a big stagecoach though, contain with jan/abus is a better option. FI revo is an option vs japan too, as well as the greedy ff.

There is two main plans to go for as otto : the tower ff and the jan/abus timing. I would say they are equally good when there is a decent stagecoach. When the stagecoach is not great, I prefer to play age 3.
China

There is a lot of options for ottomans, but I think china has an answer for all of them (even though it’s not always an easy answer).
-Age 2 plan : if you want to go for it, you need to be aggressive, otherwise china will be able to go age 3 and you will be in a bad spot (except maybe if 5 TP stagecoach, in which case a silk road build or smg probably gives you enough eco to play age 2). So what I used to do is the fake jan rush into jan/huss to prevent age up while winning late age 2. Although @Mitoe has a nice counter build to that : he ships 1 flamethrower+8 chukonu and kills my fb.
-Age 3 plan : For this reason, I know play almost always age 3 in this MU. Tower ff is a good option, but it loses often to china war academy ff with 9 pikes to kill the tower. Spahis ff archieves decent results here, mostly cuz unexpected (especially if china anticipes the falcs with infantry canons). Greedy ff does well vs china too, although players who are good at dealing damages are likely to punish it.
