The $1,500 African Championship of AOE3!!
The $1,500 African Championship of AOE3!!
The Elite Gaming Channel is proud to bring you the African Championship of AOE3! This will be a special 8-person invitational event, all shown over one weekend of action on 14th and 15th August! This will be a straight knockout tournament, starting with the Quarter Finals on Saturday and the Semi-Finals and Finals on Sunday!
There will be NO SEEDINGS for this event, and the entire draw will be made completely at random!! The lineup is as follows (alphabetical order):
AgeofKiller
Aizamk
Aussie Drongo
Ezad
Fitzbro
GiveUAnxiety
KnuschelbÀr
Mitoe
The Maps will be announced shortly (ALL AFRICAN) and the format will be as follows:
QF and SF:
Bo5
Ethiopia vs Hausa
Hausa vs Ethiopia
Free African Pick vs Free(ish) Pick*
Free(ish) Pick vs Free African Pick
Either African civ, chosen blind
In these games, the player using the African civ gets to narrow down the opponents choice by choosing any 7 civs that are excluded. From the remaining 10 civs, the non-African player chooses one. The aim of this is to show matchups featuring the African civs while increasing the chance of the African player having a reasonable chance of success. Once the field of civs is narrowed, the picks are made blind.
Final:
Bo7
Ethiopia vs Hausa
Hausa vs Ethiopia
Either African vs Free(ish) Pick
Free(ish) Pick vs Either Africa

The draw seems surprisingly fair, except for drongo
Fine line to something great is a strange change.

Re: The $1,500 African Championship of AOE3!!
Ouch, that bottom bracket. Top bracket looks like a walk in the park for Knusch as long as he prepares the new civs well enough but the bottom one looks tough.
Re: The $1,500 African Championship of AOE3!!
I donât think Iâve played against anyone lower than PR38 in any DE tournament yet, except maybe TakkCafe? Canât remember the bracket at the moment.
So itâs only natural that my half of the bracket would be difficult

For a small one time donation of only $1500 we might be able to accommodate your demands!aligator92 wrote:But I want Aiz vs Mitoe finals

Re: The $1,500 African Championship of AOE3!!
I just don't understand why Fitzbro and Aussie drongo really want to play there. without wanting to step closer to both, the two are clearly worse. one only played lakota at a moderate level and the other can apparently only achieve good results with a highly unbalanced civilization. and now the two are taking a place for significantly better players. well it is an invitation tournament but the quality stands and falls with the people that are invited
if the tournament is not in the live cast again, i will not watch it.

Re: The $1,500 African Championship of AOE3!!
I get what you are saying but both Aussie and Fitz are content creators who bring more people to watch streams and play the game, so it is not unfair to include them in a tournament like this (New DLC = Chance for more new people to join the game)oldskool_bro wrote:I just don't understand why Fitzbro and Aussie drongo really want to play there. without wanting to step closer to both, the two are clearly worse. one only played lakota at a moderate level and the other can apparently only achieve good results with a highly unbalanced civilization. and now the two are taking a place for significantly better players. well it is an invitation tournament but the quality stands and falls with the people that are invited

Re: The $1,500 African Championship of AOE3!!
In some sense it is unfair, but I think that is not relevant. It is an invitational tournament brought by EGC, so it is up to their judgement and taste. For a tournament organizer there are several aspects to consider not limited to competitive ladder or giving every top player a chance.

Re: The $1,500 African Championship of AOE3!!
Drongo and Fitz have had wayyyy longer to prepare with the civs surely? Anyhow it's a fun invitational not a super serious tournament.

Re: The $1,500 African Championship of AOE3!!
but to be honest i don't know if other players were asked or not
Re: The $1,500 African Championship of AOE3!!
There was a not insignificant amount of players who were not available or did not want to play when asked.
Re: The $1,500 African Championship of AOE3!!
Most of the other responses to this have been correct, though I will tell you that although it's true I was turned down by a couple of players, both Fitz and Aussie were in my original 8.oldskool_bro wrote:I just don't understand why Fitzbro and Aussie drongo really want to play there. without wanting to step closer to both, the two are clearly worse. one only played lakota at a moderate level and the other can apparently only achieve good results with a highly unbalanced civilization. and now the two are taking a place for significantly better players. well it is an invitation tournament but the quality stands and falls with the people that are invited

As stated, it's an invitational. And while it would be totally incorrect to have a subjective invite list for an official major, for something like this a lot gets taken into account. Of course I want the top players playing the tournaments, but I also want players that bring hype and excitement to a wider audience.
For what it's worth I also don't buy into the negativity on their chances. My own, completely made up odds would give Fitz a 15% chance and Aussie a 40% chance. Fitz has who knows how many hours of Hausa under his belt already and there's no reason he can't give GUA a solid run. Having totally new civs (and maps) is such an unknown that it really just balances everything. And while Knusch is obviously insanely strong, Aussie will have also played a lot more with the African civs and I think he'll put up a big fight.
Anyway people welcome to disagree, but I honestly would question whether having simply the top 8 players would make any sense seeing as a) it's less hype and b) not objective anyway seeing as they may never have played with the African Civs and may be worse than the current invitees. As an example, Aiz isn't rank top 3 right now, but if you think that he's not a top 3 seed in the game for adapting to brand new mechanics without any prep time, you'd be mad.
Re: The $1,500 African Championship of AOE3!!
Seems a bit negative overall, your comment. If you're correct in your assumptions, then the issue will sort itself out rather quickly with only two series out of a total of nine being "one-sided"oldskool_bro wrote:I just don't understand why Fitzbro and Aussie drongo really want to play there. without wanting to step closer to both, the two are clearly worse. one only played lakota at a moderate level and the other can apparently only achieve good results with a highly unbalanced civilization. and now the two are taking a place for significantly better players. well it is an invitation tournament but the quality stands and falls with the people that are invited

Why not just be happy there was an event to be streamed in the first place?
