I don't really get it, I had like 10 more vills than him the whole game, somehow i still get outgathered by 2k res and then outmassed. I didn't micro the fights well for sure, but I feel like I should have just had a numbers advantage

Your opponent has a livestock pen with livestock in it. Since you didn't push hard enough at any time, you allowed those livestock to give some pretty sick returns.
He transacted Big Benny for 750 wood and 900 coin instantly (apart from at least three or four other cattle) while you didn't achieve much with your initial unit shipments.

Your opponent played pretty much like Dutch (stayed in base, didn't scout map, sent five economic shipments compared to your three).

I don't think the game counts the two mountain monasteries in the vill count (although the coing under them did get exhausted due to the 7 abuns).

IMO you could have won by a good margin but you didn't commit to a strong push with your all infantry composition (barring your remaining three kanya from the shipment) early enough. Had you not backed away in the fight at eight and a half minutes his abus shipment would have been too late to the party. Unfortunately this didn't happen and his 8 abus took amazing trades vs your army, twice).

Ethiopia's play felt very systematic.

• Start double monastery

• send and train abuns to increase coin economy (also eases macro control by making vills gather only food and wood)

• buy zebu cattle with just 100 coin

• sell the cattle a bit later for a substantial amount of coin.

A pretty good positive feedback loop. Macro can be fixed instantly.
