Chinese Newspeak

Post by fei123456 »

- Words such as "liberty" "freedom" are banned in most websites and forums. Instead, you have to type varieties, like "rhibety" "phlidom". While official medias can use these words, to blame "USA fake freedom/democracy/etc".

- Words "money" "dollar" "kill" are not allowed in videos. Instead, they use "K" for "kill", "M" for "money", etc.

- Women breast that are bigger than a baseball are likely to be covered by mosaic. So do any type of blood. But movies that we fight against US army are not limited by this: any kind of blood and gore are allowed.

- Discussing Chinese politics is not allowed anywhere. Instead, we use "Vietnam" "Japan" "Korea" "Western Korea" "South Slavic" "India" to describe "China". "Vietnam has betrayed communism" "Japanese are working 70 hours a week" "South Korea is dominated by Trusts and capitalists" ... These are not really talking about Vietnam and Japanese.

- The name of leader should be avoided in most cases. Even "Winnie the Pooh" may bring you trouble. We use "primary school graduated" to describe him, and "the elder" to describe former leaders.

- We use "walk" for "procession", "Paris" for "revolution", "run" for "immigrant abroad".

- We use "Mumbai" for "Shanghai". It's said that some Indian think Mumbai is more fashion than Shanghai, and we use this to taunt them; but after blockade, starve and chaos these months in Shanghai, "eastern Mumbai" "tiny Mumbai" is used by most of us to describe Shanghai.

I wonder if the smartest AI 100 years ago can really transcribe the language we're using nowadays. It should be 100 times confused than Confucian's words.

It doesn't really matter, as most of us are master of newspeak now. But sometimes it just feel... disgusting to use these strange words.

Developments like these are not very promising. The ruling elites might very well either dig their own graves in this way or make the country become another North Korea soon.

Anyway, I hope you and your family stay safe for the potentially turbulent times ahead.

It's all happening on schedule, following the ideas and insight of Wang Huning, the ideological advisor of China's leader.
Wang Huning visited the USA on many occasions and witnessed in person the moral and social decay of Western societies, the debasement of values, the tendency of culture to gravitate towards the lowest common denominator in human nature: flaunting wealth, your physical assets, chasing the latest fads and signalling that you're mastering them so you are socially influential, etc.
Wang Huning realised China is starting to show the same trends as the USA and other Western countries and started sounding the alarm among the ranks of Chinese leadership.
That's why the party decided to start cracking down on the celebrity culture, banning ghetto culture imported from the USA (rappers, chains, display of low-life attitudes), banning big boobs in videos and twerking.
They want to avoid seeing China being taken over by the same diseased culture of consumerism and commercialisation of human relations (OnlyFans, streamers selling online parasocial relationshipping to lonely people, etc).

They want to avoid this kind of culture from the USA (or other Westernised countries):

A quick classification of what they want to avoid, before someone jumps at any conclusions based on these pics/vids:
- low-life ghetto culture
- consumerism and its attending addictions (gaming, fast-food, social media bragging about what you consume)
- weaponisation of racial/gender/sex issues pitching different categories of people against the other (blacks vs whites, men vs women, straight vs queer, gays vs trans, trans vs women)
- normalisation of obesity (it's ok to be fat, body positivity campaigns)
- commercialisation of human relations (it's normal and even awe-inspiring to get out of highschool and make a fortune on OnlyFans)
- segregated schools for the sake of protecting category X of individuals, while actually promoting X vs Y thinking, embedded hostility and adversity in society, spiteful policies created around racial/gender/sex/ethnic issues

There's a very informative article on Wang Huning here, if you have the time to read it:

That may be so, but it's still 1/7 of the examples that fei brought up. Even in this regard I wonder if banning/censorship of peoples behavior will lead to a better outcome in the end... It's a social experiment (from the perspective of an outsider).

Some of what he mentioned is just classical totalitarian regime trying to control public discourse, to keep society steered in the "right direction" and away from whatever they consider ideologically deviant.
Others are part of this plan of cracking down on Western/American culture taking up roots in China.
Yet others are just part of the CCP's plan to promote a homogenous ethnic Han society that is free of internal ethnic issues and conflicts (that silently plague Western Europe) and to promote pride for this idea of a common Han nation.

Well, there're no gastapos and you won't be really sent to jail by a few words. But the society is losing its passion and creativity under such control. People don't care about anything anymore, they just live and work like machines, been blocked at home suddenly, and lose job by no reason. Nobody is expecting a better future. Many are waiting for another world war with nuclear weapons, just for some "change".

More of that "self-expression" culture from the USA that is getting globalised now and which the Chinese CCP wants to avoid taking roots in China:

This is how social conditioning works: what you're exposed to regularly eventually becomes something that's "always there" so it's part of what's common and normal

Life is blight!
If I were a petal
And plucked, or moth, plucked
From flowers or pollen froth
To wither on a young child’s
Display. Fetch
Me a ribbon, they, all dead
Things scream.

Just to correct some misunderstanding here. Indians don't think Mumbai is better than Shanghai. Some politician had said something along the lines that we will turn Mumbai into Shanghai in 5 years.
Fine line to something great is a strange change.

I am still not sure but I think Xi might be a step backward for China. He should have completed his 2 terms and went away. The longer he stays, the more independent, prosperous, and stronger China will become, sure. But also a step backwards in terms of social and cultural progress. I am not against controlling the narrative but narrative has to be controlled through ideas. Idea is like a half filled balloon which cannot burst. Outright banning daily use words for ex. results in discomfort and revolutionary ideas rather than the intended effect of suppression.

The economy is decaying fast these years, thanks to his smart policy. China is developing rapidly after joining WTO, but he's driving international business away now, turning us into a huge North Korea. I don't think a primary school graduated can handle such a country.

It does seem like the sand castle is crumbling. I think when the government impedes too much on the rights of its people, it's set up for failure. It's like Russia to an extent. When the whole country is run in a way to please the dictator then it's not going to run well
