I can't believe I have to write this. I was planning to spend a wonderful Sunday afternoon queuing up some ladder games of Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, using the worst possible execution of an already terrible British build to tank my Elo another 100 points, but I have encountered something that has shaken me to my core and may put me off of this game forever.

Others have already demonstrated the lows to which cheaters in this game will sink, Harrison's strange unwillingness to ban them, and the general inferiority of Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition to the third-greatest strategy game of all time, Age of Empires III: The Asian Dynasties with the Ensemble Studios Online Community Patch. This we all knew. But I have discovered a new piece of information so stunning that I too must break my silence and raise public awareness about the state of this once great game.

Cheating.

Not just cheating, but cheating from someone I once looked up to, a former player of Mandarin Duck Squad (which achieved a notable victory in Season 2 of the Ensemble Studios Online Community Premier League).

Not just cheating from a former player of Mandarin Duck Squad, but cheating that Microsoft openly endorses. It's unbelievable that I'm saying this, but Microsoft allows and even encourages players to cheat in the most flagrant way possible. This isn't simply sneaking an extra 4v shipment in, having Eco Theory on, or maphacking. This is true bee pee dee ess colony-tier cheating; it's blatant Monster Truck spawning and making a complete mockery of competitive play.

While our faith in Garja may never be shaken, our attachment to this game which stems roughly 70% from habit, 20% from nostalgia and 10% from growing too old to get into new games, suffers greatly from this development. But if we let it come to this, what is even left for us? Are we doomed to fall into the same trap as other 30 somethings who feel left behind, fall prey to bigotry and defend every Republican sex offender on Twitter as our new hobby?
