Age of Empires III explained - a guide aimed for AoE 2 and 4 players
Hi there! As I'm new on this forum, let me introduce myself. :)
I'm Floos (or just Flo) and mainly an AoE 2 player. I played AoE 3 in the past as well with Legacy but it didn't really click with me until Definitive Edition (I guess due to a variety of reasons such as unlocking HC cards and whatnot). With last week's news of cancelling the AoE 3 DLC, I thought about things I could do as mainly an "outsider" that stil learns this game in order to help others discovering it and started writing a guide. It may contain mistakes and false information so if you spot something you don't deem correct, please let me know and I'll fix it! Also, feel free to share the guide yourself to any potentially interested players. :)
The target audience of this guide are people that already played in AoE game before and in that case AoE 2 and 4 as both games have the largest playerbase (if we exclude AoE 1 in Vietnam).

Re: Age of Empires III explained - a guide aimed for AoE 2 and 4 players
nice work!
the only thing i found while glancing through it was this (under Arsenal and Attack values):
you can differentiate between:
-Meele (halbs, pikes, huss etc.)
-Ranged (skirms, musk, urumi etc.)
-siege attack (cannons, grenadiers etc.)
Almost all of them, except cannons also have a Hand attack, which is always meele damage.
the only thing i found while glancing through it was this (under Arsenal and Attack values):
I´d say all units (except form monks; there might be more) have a siege attack, and can attack buildings. As with other Age-games, there are different Attack types in AoE 3. Most melee units have Siege Attack which is anti-building damage.

Sounds like a great idea to write a guide, especially for those jumping from AoE 2 and 4. I’m sure a lot of people will appreciate it, and I’ll definitely check it out. I’ll let you know if I spot anything that needs tweaking. Keep up the good work and feel free to reach out anytimeFloosWorld wrote: ↑08 Feb 2025, 08:59Hi there! Wow! while this guide is shockingly informative and well written, it is missing some very important information, which can be found in this shorter guide https://aoe3.fandom.com/wiki/Manually_U ... ick%20yes.

That's awesome you're making a guide to help others get into AoE 3. I’ll check it out and let you know if I spot anything off. Keep it up, you're doing a great jobFloosWorld wrote: ↑08 Feb 2025, 08:59Hi there! As I'm new on this forum, let me introduce myself. :)

This is really good. You have a great knack for technical writing — clear, informative, concise.
Reading this guide also illuminates just why the barrier for entry for aoe3 is so high. Not only is there all of the information you present to digest, but literally in every single sentence there are exceptions to the general truth.
(Abus doing seige damage, mortars homing projectile to warships, the many confusing units that don’t occupy a typical rock paper scissors triangle, differing stats on stance, dynamic rates of fire, etc)
And then, once you learn all of the 22 civs, you have to also learn what all of the million revolts do with their million unique bonuses and unique decks and unique cards and unique conversions.

If I were a petal
And plucked, or moth, plucked
From flowers or pollen froth
To wither on a young child’s
Display. Fetch
Me a ribbon, they, all dead
Things scream.

Yep, I think that's also one of the reasons why AoE 3 didn't take off compared to AoE 2 and now 4 due to the huge amount of mechanics involved. I guess 4 will eventually have the same barrier in the long term when they add more civs in the long run whereas 2 doesn't run into the same risk due to how symmetric its civs are.
