Winter versions

I've seen lots of people complain about the new winter maps, I think it was a mistake from esoc and should be reverted. Let's see what the poll tells us

It makes me feel like I'm not playing on the maps I know, it's annoying and confusing. And it makes every map look like they're the same which is a bit boring. For some people, it's also too bright.

I don't feel strongly on this, one way or the other, but when I first learned about this update, I was assuming there would be festive decorations on the maps, as opposed to just snow. Maybe that would have gone over better.

It was alright for a few weeks over the holidays, but it might be overstaying its welcome a bit.

Yea it should be removed imo.
Anyway, people aren't going to agree with me, but I think that there should be only one spawn for each map because else it's just random.
The best example for that is Hudson Bay, you can get 3 TPs in the middle of the map (in this case a TP boom is really strong) or 4 TPs, and one player can get 4 while the other play can only get 3 (wtf? Like one player can take one less TP, it doesn't make sense). Thus, if you want to play a turtle civ, you can't know how many TPs your opponent can get, that's not really fair. Another issue is the summer vs snow version. In the summer version, you can wall (which means that you get one more hunt, one more mine, and a lot more wood) or build outposts near the sea, and abuse the island in the middle of the sea, while in the winter version you can't.

Again, AOE3 is a game with a relative large part of randomness. While the randomness of the socket on HB is not intended it is still within what is acceptable for balance (most of times it's 3v3 less frequently 4v4 or 3v4) and it is still something already present on some RE maps.
This is even more true for intended variants, such as vertical vs horizontal trade route, or winter vs summer version.
You know, you can't determine everything in advance. Or, at least you have to take into account 2 or more possible scenarios if you want to use that approach. It's just how the game works, how it is best to work (increases the number of possible combinations) and there are plenty of games based on the same logic.
Translated for your materialistic and selfish approach, it means that you have to click in with at least a strat for every possible condition.

I thought @EAGLEMUT wrote somewhere it's gonna be like that during all winter each year? If it's gone after tourney then it's fine.

Good, funny idea. Bad, rushed implementation. I would remove it for now. Rework them and try again next winter

Only on Hudson, which never got "fixed" to winter spawn.

they just don't look very nice. it's mostly just a very weird shade of white. as if you're looking at a sheet of paper. not as good looking as some of the other maps are, with different kinds of terrain and such.

i think this is demonstrably untrue.

- pampas sierras uses the rocky araucania winter palette (white and blotchy gray) as its base, and cliff-side pampas uses the same palette as cliff-side klondike (which, yes, is basically like looking at a sheet of paper, but that part of the map is seldom where the action is)
- fertile crescent uses a portion of rockies' cliff palette (white and speckled green)
- florida is white, you're right
- mendocino uses the same palette as winter kamchatka

i won't disagree with your conclusion, but it's not as if they're all just sheet-white. i can confirm we were in a bit of a pinch to push them out on limited time.

While I agree on this, I still think you should make sure both players can access to the same amount of TP. There is the same problem on Florida btw (one can take 3 TP, the other can take 2).

I've always found any winter map ugly and too bright, especially at low quality settings. A match in tournament setting should have as little randomness as possible.

Theyre not all sheet white, but theyre all just 1 terrain type covering the whole map. On re, usually there are different types of terrain within the theme. Heres its just 1 type per map. Its monotonous and kinda boring to look at. I find the same with thar desert or mendocino btw

Well considering they took the original map terrains, and substituted terrains, I guess the complaint is more with the original maps than the remakes.

I agree with you, especially on lower graphics since the winter terrains merge together.
