Gameplay Rules Event Discord Tournament Schedule

Ladies and gentlemen,
Welcome to the 2nd installment of the ESOC Premier League!

Expanding on the success of its first iteration, ESOC's next big event will be the second season of the ESOC Premier League (EPL) - a team-based tournament where 6 Team Managers draft a squad from a pool of players and duke it out over the following 5 weeks round-robin style to make it to the playoffs, where the best 2 teams face off to determine this year's reigning champs. Each team must have a minimum of 6 players, with 5 players on the main roster and at least 1 substitute. Players will be drafted in a Live Auction Event, with Team Managers bidding on players using a limited amount of "duck coins". Each team is also granted one "champion", a player who is theirs for free and basically functions as the team's assistant manager. The ESOC Premier League is one of the most fun and engaging tournaments ESOC has to offer, so read on if you're interested!

The admins for the event this year will be @BrookG, @Mr_Bramboy, and myself, @Cometk.

With that said, I'd like to welcome our managers and their champions:

Mandarin Duck Squad - @Vinyanyérë + @Mitoe
The Nilla Ninjas - @Aizamk + @iamturk
Hudson Bay BIGs - @n0el + @samwise12
New World Challengers - @WickedCossack + @[Armag] diarouga
Somali Kabuli Gaming - @princeofkabul + @Hazza54321
Cuirassier Management Co. - @TheNameDaniel + @Kaiserklein

Player sign-ups are open now. You can sign up by making a post in the Sign-ups thread with your ESO username. Sign-ups will close Friday, March 27th at 23:59 GMT.

Keep in mind that signing up does not guarantee that you will be drafted - hop in the EPL discord and make sure to prove your skills to the team managers to ensure your place in the event!

The 4-Part Captain's Guide to Getting Drafted in EPL:

Are you a frustrated RE player worried about participating in EPL Season 2? No worries, I've created the perfect and easy 4-part template for any of you who want to trick a manager into drafting you to this prestigious event.

It's simple: just copy the template and for each line, fill in the following blank with the answer that fits you most.

Template:
Hey [Manager's name],

I'd really be interested in playing for you this EPL. While I may be known as a [main civ] player, _____

A

I'm an extremely hardworking player and teammate. Additionally, _____

B

I've actually been practicing a lot for this recently, and here is one of my best games with a build order I made myself, _____

C

I work great with others and will be very active in a teamchat. I'm also one of the best supporting teammates on ESOC, as I _____

D

If you would like any recorded games or auction advice, please let me know. I hope to hear from you soon!

For example, a possible manager PM could look like this:

sample

I hope that, with this guide, I can help some of the other struggling Captains that would like to play in this season of EPL!

Hey team managers,

I'd really be interested in playing for you this EPL. While I may not be known as a good player of any particular civ, I'll let you know that I have bashed multiple 2nd lts in high skill, great plains, 1v1 unr games (don't wanna lose my precious elo points).
I'm an extremely hardworking player and teammate. Additionally, my skill and dedication are so high that I never play noob laming no skill civs like russia, india, china, spain, ports, iro, sioux or the other native civ. Instead, I focus on high-level, competitive, 200iq civs like germans, french or brits.
I've actually been practicing a lot for this recently and I would show you one of my best games with a handcrafted build order, however, as I am not yet officially part of your team (but surely will be), these strategies are too secret to reveal. Rest assured however, that they will prove deadly (if my opponents are at most 1st lts).
I work great with others and will be very active in a teamchat. I'm also one of the best supporting teammates on ESOC, as I have gained an absurd amount of likes for various high-effort memes I posted in the memes forum, showcasing both my large initiative and insane creativity, which I also directly translate into my high skill german/france semi ffs and skirm/goon spam.

Hey team managers,

I'd really be interested in playing for you this EPL. While I may be known as a the second worst main france player of all time, I'll let you know that I recently added the xbow rush to my available strats. Now i have a plethora of options available to me, which are the cav semi ff, the musket semi ff, the pike semi ff, the bow semi ff, the spy semi ff and the xbow rush semi ff. With this versatile strategys i can never be surprised again.
I'm an extremely hardworking player and teammate. Additionally, my skill and dedication are so high and that i hate mistakes so much, i dont even learn from them, i just ignore and forget them right away. To prove this, i manage to lose every second game by standing under my opponents TC sieging it.
I've actually been practicing a lot for this recently and I would show you one of my best games with a handcrafted build order, however, as I am not yet officially part of your team (but surely will be), these strategies are too secret to reveal. Rest assured however, that they will prove deadly (if my opponent doesnt expect me to semi ff).
I work great with others and will be very active in a teamchat. I have coached many players to go from pr 10 to pr10.01 and have written an op guide that will never be added to the strategy wall because there is a conspiracy probably.
My greatest achievement is migrating my entire base 6minutes into the game, by deleting the TC and rebuilding it on the other half of the map, completely confusing my opponent since he cant find me anymore. Even though he was an incredibly strong player and playing as the lamelammeciv Russia, i eeked out a clutch game against this monster of a pr12!!!

Hey team managers,

I'd really be interested in playing for you this EPL. While I may be known as Mitoe Jr player of all time, I'll let you know that I recently added the GUA 3 caravel rush to my available strats (taunt 115 here). Now i have a plethora of options available to me, which are the virginia company spam. With this versatile strategys i can never be surprised again.

I'm an extremely unmotivated player and bad teammate. Additionally, my skill and dedication are so low and that i hate mistakes so much, i dont even play, i just resign. To prove this, i manage to lose every second game by resigning.

I've actually been practicing a lot for this recently and I would show you one of my best games with a handcrafted resign, however, as I am not yet officially part of your team (but surely will be), these resigns are too secret to reveal. Rest assured however, that they will prove deadly (if my opponent doesnt resign first).

I will leave the team discord at least three times over the course of the event. I have coached many players to go from pr 20 to quitting aoe and have written an op guide that I lobbied to be added to the strategy wall because there is a conspiracy because I am Mitoe Jr.

My greatest achievement is losing to dontay twice and also to sofiav, by resigning before my opponent resigned confusing my opponent since they didn't deserve to win. Even though dontay was an incredibly strong player and playing as the lamelammeciv India, i eeked out a clutch resign against this monster of a pr12!!!

I also want to add that my second biggest achievement is baiting SirCallen into playing me when i was having hotkey lag issue, so our France v Brits game lasted twice as long as the timer indicated. Naturally, i completely surprised him with my cav semi ff, and the falcs in lag proved to much to handle for his poor, unsuspecting, bumbling hussars. With the plot of my elaborate strategy unfolding flawlessly, his mouse cursor naturally drifted up up up and right, until he found sweet release in resigning this shitshow of a game.

For real though, sorry for that game Callen <3

Cometk's UNBIASED power ranking & auction predictions

Obviously this bullshit I'm about to type is all tentative and depends on who and who does not sign up to participate in this season. For each player I'm giving a maximum bid that I would place, and a minimum bid I think they should sell for. Because this is done before there is an actual list of players, at least a few of these estimations are bound to be inaccurate compared to what the final results will be. These are just my (unbiased) opinions though.

Format:
rank. player
Expected Maximum Bid / Minimum Bid
description

SLOT 1'S

1. Hazza54321
SKG Champion
Maybe this is a little controversial of a placement, but I think Winter Champion Hazza has the skill to be regarded as the #1 slot, and in this event especially he's going benefit from the home court advantage of SKG infrastructure and spirit that exists outside of EPL.

2. Kaiserklein
CMC Champion
Employedserklein will have less time this season to be the coach of CMC and worse yet, less time to practice himself, so that makes him less of the overwhelming threat he has been in past events. That's why I expect him to perform a bit worse than Hazza and put him at #2 on this list.

3. LordRaphael
Max: 4500 / Min: 3800
Even though he was knocked out early in the Pro Division of Winter, I think that reflects more about snowww never rusting than it does about Raphael being rusty himself. Raphael is Raphael and, similar to snowww, he'll dominate the field even with minimal practice. I don't know if he'll play in this tour, since it's an even bigger commitment than a seasonal major, but we'll see, I guess. He's the strongest draft pick if he signs up.

4. diarouga
NWC Champion
he is busy IRL but will nerd this event harder than others, so yeah I might say he's stronger than Mitoe. He also loves the strategical aspect of the game and will be inclined to give advice to his teammates more than other top players will.

5. Mitoe
MDS Champion

6. iamturk
NN Champion

SLOT 2'S

7. Knuschelbär
Max: 4200 / Min: 3700
Knusch sold for 2200 in the last EPL and that's a bonkers deal for a top 10 player. Managers will be smarter this season so that that won't happen again. The whole German cluster of Knusch/Lukas/Erik is pretty close in 1v1 skill level so these slots are kind of interchangeable. I put Knusch at the top because I expect him to sell for the highest.

8. Lukas_L99
Max: 4100 / Min: 3600
Similar to Knusch, Lukas had a good season in EPL1 and showed up with respectable results against opponents stronger than him. He has the skill and will be a top bid this season. Unfortunately he has an awful habit of getting powerwashed in Bo7 series', like Grand Tour Playoffs and his Winters Semis & Bronze matches. Even though it's unintuitive that Lukas should perform better with rules that will disproportionately disadvantage him, I feel as though the EPL format lends better to Lukas' strengths better than the NWC civ rules of major tournaments.

9. snowww
Max: 4050 / Min: 3200
Erik just doesn't go down easily, ever. For some reason top players don't seem to be unhappy when they're asked to play against snowww compared to the other top players they could be facing, but Erik still manages to put every series on game point so he's kind of perpetually underrated. Erik is active enough that he isn't truly rusty, and I bet even if he was inactive he's fine enough to be a team's top-end slugger, there's plenty of evidence to indicate that. Capable Slot 1/Slot 2 player who is very unlikely to drop points.

10. The_LastSamurai
Max: 3850 / Min: 3300
TLS was gonna play in EPL1 but backed out during signups for some reason. That was pretty disappointing, but if he can get over his hate-boner for the ESOC tournament admins I think he should be excited to compete in this season. The biggest risk when drafting TLS is that he might get himself banned early in the season for flaming his opponents and misconduct, so if you're comfortable making that gamble, TLS is a top level draft and I think he will be the glue to whatever team he's on.

11. samwise12
BIGs Champion
Samwise has a lot of crusty tournament appearances since his return to the scene last year, getting first-round blasted in GUA's sub tours and upset by a lt colonel in TWC2. He finally upped his performance this Winter with close series' against Aizamk and TLS, and has had decent ladder metrics for a while now, which makes me more inclined to believe he won't get roasted by the competition this season. He's still easily the weakest champion and BIGs are going to have to gambit on grabbing other top drafts in the field to offset Sam's weakness.

12. KINGofOsmane
Max: 3800 / Min: 3000
Osmane surprised me in Winter. A lot of players rag on him for being a point-sitter and a Captain slayer, and yeah, he is, but he's still really good. Even in his 4-0 loss to Kaiserklein in the Pro Ro16 I was impressed with how well he performed - particularly his Japan vs Kaiser's France on Florida I distinctly remember being impressed with in the way he held, reversed tide, and kept a close game for 37 minutes. It's possible managers still underrate him at auction and that might make him a steal.

SLOT 3'S

13. Lecastete
Max: 2800 / Min: 2000
Yeah, I think Castete is really the best among the field for the Slot 3 position. Just looking at the way his mechanics have vastly improved in the past few months combined with an ostensibly better sense for gameflow, gives me a solid impression of his current level. I think he can reach into the Slot 2 position and cover some of those players if asked to, and even win some series' there. If he's selling for 2k I definitely consider that a steal.

14. SoldieR
Max: 2650 / Min: 1800
Mitoe once told me that he feels like SoldieR performs better the less he practices, something I've since dubbed the Quicksearch Syndrome. SoldieR is way too inconsistent to be considered a Slot 2 player. A team would be making a grave mistake if they think SoldieR is going to be their top end draft and not simply a supplement to it. There are players above him on this list that I think he can have a close series' with, but fielding him in that position for too long is going to err towards the side of disaster more than order. Still, SoldieR had good EPL1 results, winning against Samwise and WickedCossack who are players I would put in the Slot 2 position. That means that while SoldieR has a lot of underwhelming single-elim tournament performances, he's still solid overall and kind of unpredictable. He's also the most tenured player on this list and that does count for something.

15. tabben
Max: 3200 / Min: 2200
If tabben was active it'd be over for you clowns. Despite having the skill ceiling to be a top 5 player, I honestly estimate that if tabben signed up now he would only be performing ~PR35 level for the first few weeks of the event. That makes him one of the biggest gambles at auction. He's only 6 months removed from the game but when he came back a few weeks ago to grind some matches he was dropping games to players who he would've easily washed when he was at his peak. I'm confident he won't play but would be delighted to be proven wrong.

16. Pérez
Max: 2600 / Min: 2000
Quite the come up. I'm pretty sure Perez signed up for EPL1 and didn't even get drafted, which goes to show how overlooked some of the players were at the time (Flontier also got passed over despite being acceptable caliber to be drafted). Perez juiced Optimus in the Winter Pro Qualifiers and had a standout series with Knusch in the Ro16 with a very real chance of making the Pro Division top 8. Unfortunately for our boy Perez, Knusch was able to bring the match back in the last two games, but this series gave Perez the credibility he is greatly deserving of.

17. SomppuKunkku
Max: 2500 / Min: 1800
Hard to rate. I would place Somppu higher on this list skill-wise, but because of his SKG ties I have no idea if he can really get his head in the game if he is drafted by any other team than his namesake. If he won't give it his all for whatever team he's drafted by, he shouldn't sign up.

18. India_Bot1999
Max: 2550 / Min: 1800
Miggo had an inconspicuous Winter run but a respectable performance in EPL1, and has the respect of his peers from a top 16 power rankings place in Winter. I think Miggo is more focused on RL now than AoE3 but I don't think he's all that rusty which is why I still place him high on this list.

SLOT 4'S

19. Jerimuno
Max: 2350 / Min: 1600
I've written at length about Jeri before. Solid slot 3/slot 4 spot skill-wise but he has the fortitude of a Cheeto puff. I think he's still decent as the backbone of a team because he's active and a good-humoured guy, but in-game, chances are if he starts off a series slow he'll never get going properly because the tilt will get to him first. He might have vied for a Slot 3 position, but his fragile ego makes him less valuable than his peers.

20. ageofkiller
Max: 2250 / Min: 1600
Yes, this is my post-patch placement of rusty crusty breezey beautiful. If he was active, I probably would've placed him below Osmane. It's not a guarantee that breeze plays since he's busy with studies but I know he really wants to. I think that, similar to Osmane, breeze is a skilled player that other top players rag on too much which deflates peoples perception of their skill level. He's good and his record in the last EPL shows that. Most importantly he's a committed teammate and willing to play practice matches. Now, this placement is kind of wishful thinking if breeze actually comes back in the next few weeks and practices. I think this is about the level he could be at, but he might still have a rough time against less rusty opponents.

21. OPTIMUS__PRIME
Max: 2200 / Min: 1500
It's wild how Opti went from looking like an insanely solid player when he had a 9-6 main season record last EPL with a 5-2 win over Jerimuno at Playoffs, to looking absolutely crusted over and tilted off the face of the earth when he got blitzed by Perez and Ezad in the Winter Championship. That's probably the on-brand level of inconsistency that makes Opti opti. While he's a credible middle-tier player, he got a lucky break last season when he was drafted by Aizamk to the Nilla Ninjas, the most hands-off team that was perfectly suited to his personality. He also benefited from German team support from Knusch and Erik which he isn't guaranteed to get again this year. So despite having a ceiling that makes him capable of being a Slot 3 player, I think there's no chance in hell he can repeat the graces of his EPL1 run.

22. King_Ownage2nd
Max: 2100 / Min: 1300

23. Yurashic
Max: 2200 / Min: 1200
I'm not certain that Yurashic will compete in EPL2 and this is a pretty liberal ranking considering we didn't see his performance during Winter. He had been on a hiatus for some time and came back maybe a little more than half a year ago, he's still on-and-off but he's been slowly gaining back his rank. Yura punches around the Colonel level so it's hard for me to see him being a bad draft but I'm also unsure how reliable he can be considering his inactivity.

24. Ezad
Max: 2200 / Min: 1000

SLOT 5'S

25. Forjustice
Max: 2200 / Min: 1400
Hot off an MVP run in EPL1, I think Forjustice is going to be mad overhyped this season. He's a colonel level player but also pretty inactive and I think now that players have a better sense for his style, he won't be as much of the Slot 5 bludgeon as he was in the last event. He feeds best on players who struggle to counteract off-beat playstyles, so, actually looking at it, he definitely could still slaughter the rest of this Slot 5 field. I think he can reach into the Slot 4 position and oust some of the other players there too but overextending him too far will be when he starts to underperform.

26. theonlybaus
Max: 1800 / Min: 1000

27. GiveUAnxiety
Max: 1250 / Min: 800

28. Conquerer999
Max: 1750 / Min: 1000
Dick didn't play in Winter, I think because he's busy with university this time of year. His performance in the last EPL was quite bad but that's because he was punching way above his weight. He's much more comfortable being a slot 4 or 5 and not a Slot 3 like he was in the last season. If Dick plays this season, I think he will still play a ~lt colonel game despite being inactive, but will need some team support to get over his characteristic predictability.

29. Flontier
Max: 1250 / Min: 800

30. Mongobillione
Max: 1250 / Min: 600
If this list were ranking team spirit, Mongo would be worth an 8k bid. Not only is he perpetually underrated by other players (his true rank is around colonel), but he's probably the most lovable and cheerful player on this list. He's a viable slot 5, but even as a benched player he will gas up your other players so much to make them perform that 10% better. Unfortunately he works a lot so isn't able to play that often, but his positives heavily outweigh his negatives. I think he is more comfortable being a substitute than a Slot 5 though.

SUBSTITUTES

31. SirCallen
Max: 1250 / Min: 750

32. bwinner
Max: 950 / Min: 500
After an underwhelming performance in EPL1 and going into AoE3 hibernation for the past few months, this is a pretty generous position for me to place bwinner on this list. I don't expect him to sell high but bwinner does well enough on ladder and is able to take games off pros consistently enough to be considered for a draft at auction. At the very least, he can guarantee two out of five wins with botto tactics. Might be a solid pickup for a team that goes top-heavy with their bidding.

33. hatamoto_samurai
Max: 800 / Min: 500
I've been saying harcha is a beast for a long time and his Winter results showed that. He was at least PR35 before he went on a hiatus years ago and even though he's barely scraping the ranks today he is a smart player with a lot of mechanic skill. Hard for me to even say he's a sneak pick because I think the writing is on the wall. Idk if he can compete as a slot 5 without team support, because then he'd be facing actual ~pr35s, but he's still a great pickup if there are some rollover duck coins.

34. Oliveza
Max: 950 / Min: 600
Yeah, this is a pretty low valuation for Pro Player Oliveza but it was hard for me to justify putting him above other players on this list. He knows some civs but I still think he's unproven. Maybe he can sell for 950 just on hype.

35. poissondu44
Max: 800 / Min: 500
Poisson is really active lately and a super nice guy. That makes a valuable teammate, even if he only mains 2 civs to practice against lol. That's his biggest problem in an event like this. You always know what civs he's going to play. Still he's a solid and smart player, and I think this event might be enough to push him out of his comfort zone, which could make him an unpredictable asset, in a good way.

36. Kaister
Max: 900 / Min: 500

FILLER CHARACTERS

37. wookl
Max: 750 / Min: 500

38. minimoult21
Max: 900 / Min: 500
Minimoult only had a narrow loss vs abadontea (DDFantasy) in the Intermediate Ro16, and if he had won that match I think he could've also made it to Semi-Finals and competed for a Finals slot. I'm also placing him at this part of the list because his PR has ballooned up quite a bit since I last played him and he's reaching nice ELO. He kind of has tabben-like trajectory. He should have a reasonable skill ceiling considering he's reached the upper PR's in the past. He's a super friendly and active guy which means he will be a very valuable teammate, that might make him one of the most cost-effective pickups on this list.

I'm not sure if this is a generous or conservative placement for skirmisher. He got washed by Mongo in the Winter Intermediate Quarer-Finals but that's just one series and outside that his performance is good. Looking at the field of slot 5 players, I think skirmisher competes, even if he's a China bot with weak mechanics. He's good enough to be drafted and could be a valuable teammate.

40. DDFantasy
Max: 625 / Min: 500

41. HawK_GirL
Max: 600 / Min: 500
Imo HawK_GirL was overlooked in EPL1 alongside a few other notable players (Flontier, Perez, kaister, etc). He got knocked out pretty early in the Intermediate bracket but only after a toss-up 3-2 series with kaister that could've gone either way. I think HawK's rank has kind of stagnated for the past year but with team support and incentive, he has room to improve to become viable. At the very least he'd be a happy and active practice partner.

42. Peediin
He's a lowkey Brazilian player so he is overlooked. I would say he's low lt colonel but I see him online pretty often, so he could be a good pickup. I don't know if he can quite compete as a slot 5 but if your main roster features some NA timezone players he could be a valuable practice partner.

47. empireboss
empireboss is such a funny player. I don't think I've ever seen him break past pr31 but he'll still cream, like, literally any top player on ladder at some point. If I had lost my Advanced match in Winter I would've had to face him in the Intermediate bracket and I was a lot more afraid of him than of GiB tbh. And when empireboss played against GiB, he absolutely soaked him. His performance next round vs harcha wasn't up to snuff but whatever. I think empireboss is a really good sneak player to have on a roster, since he has trajectory, and with team support he might be able to surprise.

49. Zoi
Zoi had a good Winter performance, like much better than expected. If it were just by his tournament results, you'd think he is punching around the pr31-pr32 level, which is close to being a viable Slot 5 with some preparation. Zoi is inactive though and doesn't play often, so I don't think managers will draft him at auction, but he's a player to keep an eye on.

David is a smart player, akin to Somppu really, and I think if he pushed himself he could really become good, like Boneng-style good. He doesn't care about improving though, and probably won't care even if he's drafted for EPL, but I think he would care about his team's success. He's a strategically minded player and has a really good read on the field. He could be a valuable strategical adviser, if he signed up and took it at least half seriously.

53. GiBthedurrty
GiB got nuked in Winter. He also had an underwhelming performance in the last EPL but I don't really think that was his fault, I think he played decent there despite still being somewhat inactive at the time. However, because 1) he's still inactive 2) he's predictable and 3) he's a weird guy I don't think he's worth a draft this season.

56. Fard
Fard looked really crusty in his loss in the Intermediate Division. I don't know if he'll play in EPL2 but it's hard for me to know what exactly Fard's trajectory is as a player. It seems he plays the occassional teamgame but I don't think he's good enough to be rostered even if he were to practice and potentially get drafted at midseason.

@Cometk

As a critique to your awful post, I have uploaded my most recent gameplay. Please study the following recorded games and revise your essay. I expect an edited draft on my desk by Monday.
